"Baron Mitchell," Amelia explained. "I know you don't like him, Isabelle, but he's one of the only members of nobility who's comfortable letting people train to be personal maids with him."
"What about Duke Kayden?" I asked.
"He's too high-ranking," Amelia said. "Baron Mitchell is more willing to accept mistakes."
"Him?! He knocked a vase over for me to clean up when I met him!"
"He's a lot nicer than you'd think," Ella offered. "Come on, I'll show you to his room."
I really didn't want to do this, but something nagged in the back of my head that I needed to do it. "Ugh, fine."
"Just be wary not to complain to his face," Amelia warned. "When you're done, you can complain to me all you want about how horrible he was to you."
I smiled. Amelia really was an understanding boss. "Alright."
"Now go with Ella," she said.
I followed Ella up to the main floor. She explained that Baron Mitchell was one of very few nobles willing to let new maids train with him as an attendant. He apparently lived at the palace and had been doing so since he was a child.
"Apparently he asked that you train with him, too," Ella explained.
That caught me by surprise. "What? Why?!"
"Apparently he's intrigued with you."
I had no clue why on earth that man would be intrigued with me, he clearly hated me. Maybe he just wanted to torment me. Ella led me to a door in a more secluded area of the first floor. The door was rather plain and there were fewer people wandering this area of the palace.
"Lord Damian?" Ella said as she knocked on the door. "I've brought Isabelle with me so she can train as an attendant today, just as you've requested."
I tried to remember what the etiquette book said about barons. They were the lowest ranking among the regular nobility, but as someone common, I still needed to show deference with a small curtsy. Not as deep as one I'd give to the prince or even a duke or duchess, but a curtsy nonetheless. He was to be addressed as Baron or Lord Mitchell. Only speak when spoken to. I would do my best so I wouldn't get Amelia or Ella into trouble, at the very least.
"Come in, then," Mitchell's voice came from inside the room.
Ella opened the door and stepped in, bowing her head to the baron. I followed and dipped into a polite curtsy. The room was fairly plain and much smaller than the duke's room that I'd helped clean a while back. The only decorations on the wall were a few ornate swords, though I doubted they were usable. It was a large bedroom, but it was just a bedroom with a small bathing chamber attached to it. A set of glass doors led out to a patio facing the gardens on the back wall, framed with curtains so the light would come in from outside. The bed was gigantic, but it still didn't take up most of the room. A table and four chairs sat in a corner with a vase of purple and blue flowers filling it on top of the table. A desk sat on the wall opposite the bed and a bookshelf was next to the glass doors. The baron sat at the desk.
"Well then, you actually showed up," Mitchell said with a sneer. His green eyes were cold as he glared down at me. "You'll be training as my attendant today. I trust you know what that consists of?"
I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth. Ella elbowed me, reminding me to answer him. "Yes. . .Lord Mitchell."
"Good," Mitchell replied. "As my attendant, you'll do exactly as I say when I say it. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Lord Mitchell," I grumbled, keeping my teeth gritted.
"You'll break your teeth if you keep them that tightly gritted," Mitchell told me, turning away to face his desk. His voice wasn't as condescending as it had been. If anything, it had a small amount of gentleness to it.
