Unveiling Roles

"Yes, it's hers, and she wanted you to do something for her," I explained to Kamari, my fingers tracing the worn pages of Amina's notebook.

"What does she want?" Kamari inquired, her eyes searching the words on the page.

"I flipped to page 5, section 1," I replied, handing her the open book. "Here, it's right there."

Kamari scanned the words, her expression shifting from confusion to understanding. "I want you to stay on Mayah's side no matter what," she read aloud, her brow furrowing in thought.

"Do you remember what Mayah told you back in the hospital?" I prompted.

"Yes, I do," Kamari nodded slowly.

"This is what she was referring to when she said the notebook will give you your part of the role," I clarified.

"Yes, okay, got it," Kamari affirmed, a sense of determination in her voice. She was willing to oblige, having witnessed some of Esi's questionable behavior herself, especially when Esi let her parents call the cops on me.

"Alright, Princess, let's go to bed," I said, placing the notebook back in the drawer. Kamari stood up to leave but paused, turning back to me.

"Did you just call me Princess? That's what Amina used to call me when I was a kid," Kamari remarked.

"Me and her talked before she died," I confessed.

"Good night," Kamari bid me farewell before retiring to her room.

The next morning, Kamari woke me up at 6 am, informing me that her mom would drop me off. However, I had other plans. I got ready for the school day, and at 8:00 am, I heard a car beeping outside.

"I'll ride with Myah," I informed Kamari.

"Okay, can she drop me off too?" Kamari asked.

"Yeah, why not? She just transferred to Rosewood, and I work there," I replied.

We dashed outside, and I took the passenger seat while Kamari sat in the back. Kamari's mom asked if we were going to eat breakfast, but I suggested we grab something at school instead.

"We can get some at school, Auntie," I replied.

As we entered the school building, Kamari showed Myah to the office to get her class schedule. I greeted everyone with a smile and introduced Myah as a new transfer from Wiskvile High School. Adalyn's surprised expression told me she hadn't expected to see a student transfer from Wiskvile to Rosewood.

"We have three students that just came asking for their schedules," Adalyn commented.

"Yeah, they're my friends," I replied, listening intently as I received my schedule for the class I was going to teach.

I stepped into the classroom, wearing a smile that belied my nerves. The teacher noticed immediately and called on me to introduce myself to the class.

"Hello there, my name is Mayah Oberene. Nice to meet you all," I greeted, trying to exude confidence.

"Mayah, go sit next to Eillise," the teacher instructed, pointing to a desk.

I made my way to the assigned seat, passing by each student's desk. As I pulled out my chair and settled in, I noticed Esi giving me a look that clearly said she didn't like me. It was amusing, honestly, because I couldn't recall doing anything to earn her dislike.

"Alright, students, turn your book to page 67," the teacher directed.

I glanced at Esi and asked if I could share her book, but she refused and then promptly reported me to the teacher.
