CHAPTER FOUR
( Sleepover )
BEING FRIENDS WITH a boy like Jeong Seyeon brings along a different sense of joy that Zhao Daiyu only just barely begins to experience. He is warm and he is undeniably there — A presence that never seems to waver.
The love Jeong Seyeon gives is different from the love Daiyu has spent her whole life experiencing. He is not built off rough words and a dagger for a tongue, and he most definitely does not have the slightest athletic presence that had been a prerequisite to join in the troubling activities Daiyu had once partaken in. He is different in a way that cleanses Daiyu; With him, she does not feel the need to steel and cage her heart away in fear of the backstabbing blade of friendship.
Seyeon may not share her rough edges and sharp teeth, but he is her brother all the same ( Even if it is only by half ).
And for him, the star who shines too brightly to look at without being blinded, she will forever be grateful.
AS MUCH AS Jeong Seyeon had grown on Zhao Daiyu, she would never be one for overly affectionate friendships. It is simply not what she is built for.She is not made for gentle holds and flourishing love — Daiyu is made for bruises and friendly punches, for sharp tongues and wild grins.
But Seyeon is too soft around the edges to hold her fragmented soul, so she puts it in a bag and hides it away in order to fit in. Daiyu has done it once, and she could do it again a thousand times if it meant keeping the small warmth blooming in her chest alive.
Suho and Seojun, to Daiyu's mounting annoyance, do not leave after a few hours spent talking about nothing and laughing about school or other topics that hold no significant value other than to pass the time. Instead, Seyeon takes them all by the arm and sits them on the couch, declaring that they will be spending the night, and that warranted a movie.
His grin is bright, and Daiyu doesn't remember the last time she'd seen a smile so bright. Back home, there are only shrouds of bitter grins and caged expressions, because living amongst the shadows means trusting no one but your own. Daiyu cannot count the number of times she's had to fight to keep her group as one, because there are more problems than there are solutions, and a broken safe cannot possibly hold all its jewels without crumbling.
"What movie should we watch?" Seyeon asks as he squeezes himself between Daiyu and Seojun, who are sitting a good foot apart.
Daiyu scans the options with narrowed eyes. She doesn't know any of them, being from China, where she grew up watching Chinese movies and shows. Nothing on screen looks remotely familiar.
