Jency's P.O.V
After breaking the ice and going back to work after lunch the guys asked Casey and me to hang out at their place where they're staying, when I pulled out a book that was filled with short stories by Mary Shelly then opened it to the page that I marked for later and began to read.
"You're a horror fan?" Kirk's rang in my ears.
I looked up at him. " I'm more of a dark fantasy person but yeah".
"Dark fantasy?" Kirk sat down beside me.
"Think of Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White but forget what Disney said because they are much darker than you think. I have a shit ton of books on this topic".
"I think you and Cliff are more well-read out of all of us here".
" You're too kind but, Am I as intelligent as Brian? Fuck no and let me make it that clear I did not go to uni at all school wasn't my thing you saw me earlier, I'm a hands-on learner and rather do a trade school".
" Hey, I get it".
"You know what here take this. This is my third go around on reading this book I think you'll enjoy it more" I handed Kirk the book.
" Thank you but, Are you sure? I don't want to take this from you".
"Don't worry about it I have nine other copies and practically we do have a small library".
" Well thank you I might have to check it out sometime".
That's when Cliff walked into the room and said. "Hey Kirk we're about to start the game".
"Okay," Kirk turned back to me. " Thanks again for the book. This looks intriguing".
" You're welcome, What game are you about to start?".
"Call Of Cthulhu".
"Oh no way Casey and a couple of the residents played that game at the compound. I heard good things about it, but never had the time to sit down and learn how to play, I also heard that it has some similarities to DND".
" it does in a way except Call of Cthulhu doesn't use character classes, at least not the same way that D&D does. In D&D, every player character has a class that determines their role in the game. Wizards cast spells, rogues sneak around, and fighters excel at combat. The Call of Cthulhu RPG dispenses with classes and instead relies on a character's skills to define them. But how do you know how you rank in each skill? Well, to a large extent, that's up to you. During character creation, you receive several points to assign to different skills as you see fit. It's not entirely freeform, however, as you'll also be guided by your character's Occupation. Occupations are kind of like classes, in that they help define who your character is. They include things like pilots or librarians. Pilots are better at skills like Repair, Navigation, and Pilot (aircraft). For the most part, however, Occupation just affects what skills your character has access to and how good they are at using those skills. Unlike D&D, there aren't any class abilities or special powers tied to your background. If you want to get better at those skills, use them in the adventure! In Call of Cthulhu, each time you successfully make use of a skill during a game, you place a checkmark next to it. As the characters progress, there's a chance the skills they've been using will improve. It's a clever system that ties character advancement to the actual events of the game".
"Okay yeah, that makes sense unless you haven't started the game yet I'm down to play".
" Hell you sound good there's plenty of booze in the fridge, help yourself".
" Thanks you guys go ahead I'll be right there I just had to grab my cigarettes and flask".
As the two of them went into the other room I walked over to my bag and grabbed my favorite brand of cigarettes, and my flask full of vodka before walking into the room where the guys were waiting for me.
" Alright now that Jency's here let's focking go".
And so with that, we played for four and half hours when I got a notification on my pager so I unclipped it from my pants to see that it was Brian and said.
" Sorry guys it's Brian I got to take this, Where's your phone?".
" It's on the wall by the stairs".
" Alright thanks I'll be right back" I pecked Casey on the cheek before walking out of the room, to the phone and punching in Brian's phone number, then waited anxiously until I heard.
"Hello?" It was Brian.
" Hey, I got your page. What's up?".
" We went to the doctor today....."
"And?".
" Fred's HIV positive things to you we caught it early before it could turn into AIDS. I texted HIV negative".
"Shit Bri I'm sorry send Freddie my love. How is he holding up?".
" He's being typical Freddie, you know him showing down and all".
"Damn".
"How is it going in New York?".
" The guys are nice Casey and I are playing a game with them".
"Oh shit go enjoy yourself don't let me stop you".
"Alright".
" Jency before you go not a word to anyone about this, just for Freddie's sake".
"My lips are sealed".
" Thank you".
"No problem call me if you need anything, Bye".
"Will do bye".
And so I hung up the phone and turned to walk into the room where the guys were waiting for me again.
