The next morning, Jack woke his daughter up.

"Sweetheart, wake up." He said.

Mary Alice groaned.

"Come on." Jack said, gently coaxing her awake. "Time to get up for school."

Mary Alice sighed and sat up in bed.

"I don't want to go to school today." She signed.

"You have to go school, so you can get an education." Jack said. "I let you skip school yesterday, but you have to go to school today."

Mary Alice crossed her arms in annoyance.

"Come on. I'll help you get dressed." Jack said. He helped dress her in the clothes he picked out for her.

After having breakfast at the cafe, Jack dropped Mary Alice off at the saloon.

"Have a good day at school." Jack said, kissing Mary Alice on the forehead. "I'll see you later after your tutoring lesson."

"Bye Daddy." Mary Alice signed going into the saloon.

"Good morning, Mary Alice." Elizabeth greeted her. "I'm glad to see you're here and that you're feeling better."

Mary Alice smiled at Mrs. Thatcher.

"Why don't you go have a seat at your table." Elizabeth said.

Mary Alice noticed a new girl sitting at her table. She looked back at Mrs. Thatcher.

"Come on." Elizabeth said. "I'll introduce you to our new student. She started yesterday while you were out."

Elizabeth lead Mary Alice over to the girl.

"Kendra, this is your table mate, Mary Alice Thornton." She introduced. "Mary Alice, this is Kendra Adler. She and her father just moved to Coal Valley."

"It's nice to meet you, Mary Alice." Kendra said.

Mary Alice just waved.

"Mary Alice doesn't speak." Elizabeth said to Kendra.

"Oh." Kendra said. "That's alright."

Elizabeth started teaching the lesson.

At lunch and recess, Mary Alice was sitting on her own, like usual, playing with her doll.

Kendra came over to her.

"I like your doll." She said. "What's her name?"

Mary Alice wasn't sure how to answer. She sighed.

"Oh right." Kendra said. "I'm sorry."

"Is everything alright?" Elizabeth asked.

"I'm not sure how to communicate with Mary Alice." Kendra said.
