Marinette loved Adrien's apartment. In the five years they'd known each other, she was probably at his place more than her own. It was larger and surprisingly messier than her apartment, but not so much that it lost its coziness. Most of the walls were sage green, and there was a mixture of artificial and real plants around the kitchen and on the windowsills. Also, it always smelled like coffee. It was an imperfect reflection of her best friend.
She placed her things neatly in a corner, then proceeded to hog up the largest couch in the living room. Adrien shot her a playful glare, but let her have it.
"So what were you thinking for tonight?" he asked as he mixed a cup of tea for her.
Marinette grabbed the remote and flipped through a few of their options. "Legally Blonde?"
"You're just in love with Reese," he laughed.
"Of course I am. Who isn't?" Marinette scrolled a bit more and then stopped on another movie. "The Devil Wears Prada?"
"Never seen it."
"What?!" Marinette stared at him in shock. "Oh my gosh. How have I been associating with you this whole time?"
"My universal charm and knowledge of flowers make a pretty good combo." Adrien set the tea on the coffee table and took a seat next to her.
Marinette playfully scowled and tossed a pillow in the direction of his face. He put his hands up just in time to stop from being hit. "You might want to add a love for Anne Hathaway to that combo of yours," she said. "You are going to watch this movie, and you are going to love it."
"That seems like you're telling me what to do."
"I thought you enjoyed that," she sniped back, smiling. She gave up some of the couch space and positioned herself so she could prop her feet up on his lap. Adrien, being Adrien, didn't complain even when she nearly kicked him in the shoulder.
She pressed play and the movie started.
It had only been about ten minutes before a rustling sound distracted her. When she questioned Adrien, he told her he heard nothing. She narrowed it down to noise from the TV and left it at that. Only then did the sound start again.
She whipped her head around, and her building nervousness died instantly.
"Stella!" Marinette picked up the cat and snuggled her close. Stella's fur had blended in with the darkness of the apartment, hiding her from sight. Adrien watched, envious, as Stella pawed at Marinette's face.
"Why does she love you more than me?" he asked.
"How could she not?" Marinette teased. Stella purred in response.
"I can't argue with that. For some reason, everyone can't seem to get enough of the little shit," Adrien said under his breath, stroking the cat before taking her in his arms.
Something fluttered in Marinette. Adrien rarely swore, so it always did something to her whenever a profanity left his mouth. She never knew why. Adrien's warmth after a long day was exactly what she wanted. Movie nights were fun, but she supposed that what she loved was the person she shared them with.
The exhaustion of that day's artwork started to hit about halfway through the movie. She let herself fall asleep against him, breathing in the smell of coffee and roses.
