As the weeks passed, Avery spent countless hours by Harper's bedside, offering support and encouragement as her friend navigated the challenges of recovery. Each day brought new milestones and setbacks, but through it all, Avery remained by Harper's side, unwavering in her devotion.
Despite her initial reservations, Avery had grown accustomed to the routine of hospital life. She knew the names of the nurses on Harper's floor, the schedule for Harper's physical therapy sessions, and the best spots in the hospital cafeteria to grab a quick meal between visits. It was a rhythm of life that had become strangely comforting in its predictability.
But beneath the surface, Avery couldn't shake the gnawing sense of unease that had settled over her since Graham's visits had become more frequent. At first, she had brushed off his presence as a harmless gesture of friendship, but as the days turned into weeks, she couldn't ignore the growing tension that simmered between them whenever he was around.
It wasn't just the way Graham looked at Harper with concern and compassion, or the way he seemed to effortlessly make her laugh when Avery struggled to find the right words to say. It was the way Harper's eyes lit up whenever he walked into the room, the way she leaned in a little closer when he spoke, the way she seemed to come alive in a way that Avery hadn't seen in weeks.
And try as she might to push down the feelings of jealousy and insecurity that bubbled to the surface whenever Graham was around, Avery couldn't shake the sinking feeling that she was losing Harper to someone else. It was a fear that gnawed at her insides, a constant reminder of just how fragile their bond truly was.
As Avery stepped into Harper's hospital room, her heart sank at the sight of Graham sitting in the chair next to Harper's bed. She forced a smile, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling that twisted in the pit of her stomach.
"Hey, Avery!" Graham greeted her with a friendly wave, his smile brightening as she entered the room.
"Hi, Graham," Avery replied, her tone polite but distant. She walked over to Harper's bedside, trying to mask her discomfort as she glanced between her friend and the newcomer.
Harper looked up, her eyes lighting up with excitement at Avery's arrival. "Hey, Avery! Guess what? Graham brought me a new book to read," she exclaimed, holding up a thick novel with a smile.
Avery forced herself to smile back, hiding the pang of jealousy that flared in her chest. "That's great, Harper. What's it about?" she asked, trying to sound genuinely interested.
Graham jumped in eagerly, launching into a detailed summary of the book's plot and characters. Avery listened politely, but her mind was elsewhere, her thoughts consumed by the uncomfortable tension that hung in the air.
As Graham continued to talk, Avery couldn't shake the feeling that he was intruding on her time with Harper. She longed for a moment alone with her friend, a chance to reconnect and share their thoughts and feelings without someone else listening in.
But with Graham's presence looming large in the room, Avery knew that wouldn't be possible. Resigned to the situation, she plastered on a smile and joined in the conversation, determined not to let her jealousy get the best of her.
Avery hesitated for a moment before speaking up, her voice hesitant. "Um, hey Harper, how was your day?"
Harper glanced up briefly from her conversation with Graham, offering Avery a distracted smile. "Oh, hey, it was okay. How about yours?"
Avery shrugged, trying to keep her disappointment at bay. "It was alright, I guess. Just the usual classes and stuff."
Harper nodded absently, already turning her attention back to Graham. "Cool, cool. So, Graham, did you hear about that new movie coming out?"
