They talked a little more before the nurse came in and told them that it was almost time for their surgeries.
"Are you ready?" The nurse asked.
"Sure," they both answered together.
The nurse led them into the operating room, where two doctors waited for them. One of them was Dr. Lacey Wilson, while the other one was a man named Dr. David Baxter. Both of them seemed very nice and professional.
"Good morning, ladies," Dr. Baxter said cheerfully. "I'm Dr. David Baxter. Are you ready for your procedures?"
"Yes, sir," Mandy answered confidently.
"And I'm Dr. Lacey Wilson," Dr. Wilson introduced herself politely. "I'll be assisting Dr. Baxter during your operations today. Is there anything else either of you need before we begin?"
"No, thank you," Mandy replied respectfully. "I think we're all set."
Dr. Baxter smiled at them both approvingly. "Very well, then let's get started. Nurse, please prepare our patients for anesthesia."
The nurse nodded and began preparing IV lines and oxygen masks for both of them. Once they were done, she helped them lie down onto the operating tables side by side. Then she placed sterile drapes over each of their heads and necks so only the areas surrounding their throats were exposed. Finally, she attached heart monitors to each patient's chest and put on latex gloves before beginning to prep them for intubation.
As soon as the nurses finished prepping them, the doctors entered the room. They introduced themselves to everyone present before starting work. First, Dr. Baxter inserted an IV line into each patient's arm. They both fell unconscious after receiving a dose of general anesthesia through these lines. Then, Dr. Wilson suctioned out any excess saliva and blood from inside their mouths using special instruments called 'curettes'. Afterwards, she carefully made incisions along the edges of their tonsils using scalpels and scissors. Next, she cut away pieces of tissue until only thin strips remained between the cuts. Lastly, she tied off the remaining bits of flesh with sutures. When she finished cutting off all parts of their tonsils, she cleaned up the wounds and applied antiseptic solutions.
Once Dr. Wilson finished cleaning up the wounds, Dr. Baxter reappeared with a pair of forceps and tweezers. He picked up one of the severed sections of tissue and held it up for examination. He examined its shape closely before placing it inside a glass container filled with formaldehyde solution.
Next, he opened another container containing liquid nitrogen and dipped his fingers into it. He grabbed hold of another piece of tissue and froze it solid. Using his bare hands, he crushed the frozen lump against itself until it shattered into tiny fragments. These shards were then collected in yet another container.
Finally, Dr. Baxter took a third piece of tissue and placed it directly beneath the light bulb hanging above him. As soon as the beam hit it, the entire piece burst into flames!
While the doctors continued working, the nurses kept close watch over both girls' vital signs.
Every few minutes, they would check their heart rate, pulse, respiration, temperature, and blood pressure. Whenever something changed drastically, they alerted the doctors immediately.
Eventually, Dr. Baxter finished his examination of the specimens. He stood up and walked over to a nearby cabinet where he stored various surgical tools. From there, he pulled out a tray containing several syringes filled with clear fluid labeled 'antibiotics'. With steady hands, he injected each girl with several doses of this medicine. Then, a doctor directed the girls into their rooms via stretchers.
For the next couple hours, neither girl stirred or moved much except to breathe.
However, when the effects of the drugs wore off, they both regained consciousness.
"Mandy...?" Gaz rasped, rubbing her head. "What...what just happened?"
"I don't know..." Mandy groaned. Her voice sounded raspy and weak. "Where am I?"
"In a hospital," Gaz answered weakly. "You got sick too, remember?"
"Oh yeah..." Mandy remembered. "What day is it?"
"Today," Gaz stated simply. "You've been asleep since yesterday afternoon."
"Wow...that long?" Mandy gasped in shock. "I thought it was just a nap."
"Yeah...me too," Gaz confessed quietly. "But hey, at least we can go home now."
"I guess so," Mandy agreed lamely.
They heard a knock at the door.
"Who is it?" Gaz called out.
"It's me," a cheerful male voice replied. "How are you feeling?"
Both girls recognized the voice instantly - it belonged to none other than Dib.
"Ugh...hi Dib," Gaz mumbled irritably.
"Hi, Mandy, hi Gaz," Dib chirped enthusiastically. "How're you guys holding up?"
"I dunno," Mandy muttered dully. "I feel like crap."
"Me too," Gaz sighed. "My throat hurts."
"I figured," Dib grinned widely. "I brought a specific someone..."
"Oh, no, please..." Gaz and Mandy said.
