Chapter Eight: The Apology and The Invitation
As I returned to our table, Juan Franco looked up, concern etched on his face. "Is everything alright?" he asked, his voice laced with worry. I mustered a smile, trying to push aside the whirlwind of emotions that Alaric's unexpected appearance had stirred up. "Just a minor interruption, nothing to worry about," I replied, hoping to brush off the tension that lingered in the air.
Juan Franco seemed to sense that something was amiss, but he didn't press further. Instead, he changed the subject, steering our conversation towards lighter topics. As we chatted, I couldn't shake the feeling of Alaric's intense gaze burning into my back, his words echoing in my mind. What did he mean by wanting me to repay him?
Despite my efforts to focus on my dinner date, my mind kept drifting back to Alaric. I felt torn between the gratitude I felt for his help earlier and the frustration over his intrusion on my personal life. I didn't understand why he seemed so invested in my well-being, especially considering our tumultuous working relationship.
As the evening drew to a close, Juan Franco offered to walk me home, a gesture that I gratefully accepted. The cool night air helped clear my head, and by the time we reached my doorstep, I had managed to push aside thoughts of Alaric and focus on the present moment.
"Thank you for tonight, Juan Franco," I said, turning to face him. "I had a wonderful time, despite the unexpected turn of events."
"The pleasure was all mine, Rubiya," he replied, smiling warmly. "I hope we can do this again sometime."
"I would like that," I said, returning his smile. "Goodnight, Juan Franco."
"Goodnight, Rubiya," he said, leaning in to give me a gentle kiss on the cheek before turning and walking away.
As I watched him disappear into the night, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt. I had enjoyed my evening with Juan Franco, yet my thoughts kept drifting back to Alaric. I knew that I needed to focus on the present and not let the complications of my professional life interfere with my personal happiness. With a sigh, I turned and entered my apartment, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Little did I know; the events of tonight were just the beginning of a series of unforeseen interruptions that would change the course of my life in ways I never could have imagined.
As I walked through the door of our apartment, I found Aishna sitting on the couch, her expression a mix of relief and concern. "Rubiya, where have you been? I've been trying to call you all night," she exclaimed, standing up and rushing over to me. Her cheeks flushed and her hair thrown up into a messy bun.
"I'm sorry, Aish. I went out to dinner with Juan Franco, and things got a bit complicated," I replied, feeling a pang of guilt for not keeping her informed. "Juan Franco? Who's that?" Aishna asked, her curiosity piqued.
"He's a colleague of mine who helped us with Alaric's case. I wanted to thank him, so I agreed to go out on a date with him," I explained, taking a seat next to her on the couch. Aishna's eyes widened in surprise. "A date? Rubiya, that's amazing! How was it?"
"It was... interesting," I said, recounting the events of the evening, from Alaric's unexpected appearance to our conversation over dinner. Aishna listened intently, her eyes wide with disbelief at some parts of the story.
"Wow, what a night! I can't believe all that happened on your date," Aishna exclaimed, shaking her head in amazement. "But hey, at least you got a free meal out of it, right?"
I chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I guess you could say that. But enough about me, how was your night? What did you end up doing?"
Aishna's expression softened, and she hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Well, remember that guy in the red car who asked me out? Elijah Bain?"
