Flames engulfed the clearing as Ashfur's words echoed in her ears. "You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much."

Squirrelflight's heart ached as she woke in the Warrior's Den, the sleeping warriors surrounded the small area. Moss beds were in use, except Ashfur's. She exited the den, looking for the gray tom. She scanned the clearing. Ashfur's gray coat shone in the horizon full of stars.

"Ashfur." She said, a lump in her throat started to grow bigger. She followed the tom to the forest in the middle of ThunderClan's territory.

"Why did you betray me, Squirrelflight?" He scowled. The fury shook her.

"I did not!," She responded. "You betrayed me! You tried to kill my kits!"

"You chose Brambleclaw! What kind of future will he give you? He'll just give you orders like when you were an apprentice. I can give you love. I'd do anything for you."

"It's been moons, Ashfur. I've chosen Brambleclaw, end your quarrel about that."

"If this won't hurt you, then..."

A cold, evil stare shot at Squirrelflight, Ashfur's dark blue eyes shone with his victory.

"Please d-don't..." Squirrelflight begged.

"'You tore my heart out when you chose Brambleclaw over me. Anything I did to you would never hurt as much.' didn't that give the message?" He said. "Well, it would be a shame if your kits somehow turned out not to be yours, no? It would be better if you became my mate instead of hurting Brambleclaw and three poor cats who turn out not to have been yours, don't you think?"

Squirrelflight grimaced. If he managed to spill this information at the next gathering, her reputation would be ruined as crowfood. Her teary eyes turned into an expression of anger.

"You've pained me already, just please don't. The clans will suffer if this secret comes out." She begged Ashfur.

"The clans have never been at peace!" He shot.

"What about the Great Journey? The clans were together then!" She shot back. "We finally found peace. Now you will ruin moons of treaties!"

"Don't act like there hasn't been anything wrong with these passing moons!" He snapped. "Who do you think informed Firetar to go to the lake where the fox trap was?"

"Your so-called love nearly killed me! How can you love someone after making them feel pain? What then?! You think I'll love you if you kill my father?!"

"You broke my heart, Squirrelflight. Ripped it to pieces. After all these moons, do I still mean nothing to you?"

"No. I can love you but as a friend, at most."

At that point the two separated.

Many moons later, Squirrelflight walked across the bank of a river, when she saw a familiar grey pelt. She thought it would be Ashfur trying to get the two to be mates. But she noticed that the pelt was still. Unmoving. Only until Squirrelflight got closer, she saw Ashfur's corpse. His dimmed, blue eyes still had a hint of fear in it. One thought lingered at the horrifying sight...

Why couldn't he at least be a friend before dying?
