Jennie tapped at her coffee cup.
Her nails, not too long yet long enough, tapped against the ceramic cup as she blazed through the predicament she found herself in.
She was currently at Jisoo's elegantly decorated villa, trying her best to stop from pulling at the strands of her hair out of sheer frustration at her situation.
Still somewhat in disbelief, she relayed the story, from the unexpected matchmaking attempt by Taehyung's mother to the staggering offer that followed.
She eventually sighed, burying her head in her hands to keep herself grounded.
Jisoo, leaning back against her chair, listened with a mix of amusement and astonishment.
"So, let me get this straight," she finally said, trying to suppress a smile.
"You're now engaged, in a fake pregnancy scandal, and about to be ten million dollars richer, all because Taehyung can't say no to his mommy?" She asked with an incredulous tone, taking a large sip of her coffee.
Jennie groaned, running a hand through her hair. "When you put it like that, it sounds even crazier. I'm not sure if I should be laughing or booking an appointment with a therapist."
Jisoo blinked, her initial shock quickly giving way to laughter.
"Oh my god, that's hilarious! Your jokes are getting more crazy. Is this a new form of stress relief? Because, girl, you had me for a second there," she said, chuckling, convinced Jennie was trying a new unique therapy or something of the sort.
But the laughter slowly died on Jisoo's lips as she stared at Jennie, failing to see any signs of a joke on her face.
"Wait, you're not joking? This is for real?" she asked, disbelief morphing into concern. "Jennie, this is... this is nuts! You can't seriously be considering it."
"Well it's too late now." Jennie rolled her eyes, taking another sip of her coffee that was less bitter than her situation.
"Wait...so you're serious about this? You're seriously doing it?" Jisoo asked again, her voice raising with every word as Jennie simply nodded, plunging the two into a moment of silence.
And then, Jisoo burst out laughing. It was either the incredulity of the situation or eerie calmness of Jennie, but she couldn't help it.
"It's not funny, Jisoo. This could blow up in my face. His mom is relentless, and now I have to pretend I'm carrying Taehyung's child? What have I gotten myself into?" Jennie, already feeling the strain of her impromptu decision, wasn't quite as amused.
"I mean I'm a lawyer! This can count as deceit and what if I get sued for fraud?! Lawyer career? Poof! Gone in thin air." She groaned once more, her ceramic cup landing on the counter with a thud as Jisoo flinched.
"Oh, come on, Jennie. I mean, you have to admit, the idea of you and Mr. Tech Mogul playing pretend family is a little funny." Jisoo grinned, pinching her fingers to make a point.
"I just... I don't know how I'm going to keep this up. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt or the press gets wind of it." Jennie couldn't help the frown that tugged at her lips, her frustration growing.
"For the money, darling. Ten million dollars," Jisoo reminded her with a dramatic flourish. "And because deep down, you love the chaos."
"Fuck chaos. I don't want chaos. I just want to earn money and live on my own with my dogs in my beautiful penthouse. But this— this was not the way I expected to earn money." Jennie shrugged Jisoo off, wondering if she should've just gone to her therapist for advice instead.
