KENNA
Heading into work, I stopped once inside when I heard the engine return. Looking over my shoulder, I watched Adrian drive away.
This morning was weird.
Why would he show up at my house?
My mind raced over everything he said. He wanted nothing from me for doing my roof, only a hot meal. That I could do, but part of me thought he would have wanted more or something else.
Shaking my thoughts away, I looked away and walked into the building. Walking past the reception area, I noticed the two girls who worked there staring at me.
Neither looked happy, but when they noticed I was looking, one looked down while the other rolled her eyes. "What are you looking at?"
Taken aback by the hostility in her voice, I thought she may be having a bad day and smiled. "Sorry," I whispered and walked away, only to hear them both let out what I could only describe as a growl. I walked straight to the elevator, keeping my eyes ahead and not looking back.
Ever since being here, I have felt alone. A few friendly faces were around, but the rest had me questioning whether I made the right call to stay there.
The elevator stopped and opened. I walked into it, but I wasn't alone—Catrina was in there, wearing a stunning red dress and heels. She looked at me and smiled. "Kenna," she said as I turned around and looked at her. "How's it going? How is the house coming on?"
Before I could say anything, I heard a noise from the lobby and saw the two women at the reception staring at me. Their faces hardened, but after a few seconds, they looked away and got to work, and the doors to the elevator closed.
What the hell was all that about?
Not long after the doors closed, the elevator went up.
"Are you okay?" Catrina asked, which made me look back at her.
"Yeah," I said with a smile. I thought I would because I didn't answer her question about the house. "As for the house, I finally finished that bookcase I told you about."
Catrina smiled at me and nodded just when the elevator stopped at our floor, and we both walked out. We headed toward our office until I stopped to go to the kitchen. "I'm going to get some coffee," I said, making Catrina stop and look at me. "Do you want some?"
Catrina smiled and nodded. "Yes, please."
I walked into the kitchen and made the coffees for us and even one for Maddox. This was part of my job when I made everyone's coffee. I rarely ask and make them, but Catrina and I were talking, so I thought it would be polite if I asked.
The coffees were made, and I picked up Catrina's and mine first to take into our office so I could drop off my things and then come back for Maddox. I usually have his to-do list for the day, so I needed to collect that.
Picking up mine and Catrina's coffees, I headed out of the kitchen and into the office where Catrina was already on her computer. I placed the mugs on the desk and removed everything from my chair, such as my bag. I looked up to see Catrina looking at me. "So, how did the guttering go?" she asked, giving me an odd look.
Did she know I lied about that?
I cleared my throat while I looked at her, grabbing my notebook to write the to-do list from Maddox. "It was okay," I said, moving away and heading out the door, while I heard her stifle a laugh.
Fuck. She would ask me more questions about the house and even mention Adrian. I hated talking about my personal life. It wasn't necessary. I was boring, at least. Who would want to know about me?
