The Backstory

Backstory:
Riley grew up to middle class parents, and though the house was nice, it wasn't a home. His parents, Aaron and Elise, fought constantly. He found solace away from the yelling in hockey, and as he excelled in hockey, his dad began to push him really hard, harder than a normal parent would. This because a point of contention for Elise, and the couple divorced when Riley was around twelve. The divorce was messy, dragged out in court and with custody fights that ended in Aaron getting Riley almost full time. Elise remarried quickly, having a daughter soon after. To Riley, it seemed like she replaced him. While he loves his little sister, he can't help but feel like his mother loves Adele more.

He struggled through classes in high school, spending more time skating and practicing than he ever did on homework. He realized he was gay during this time, and it turned out pretty easy to hide. Aaron told him hockey was everything, and he didn't have time to worry about girls. His dad only got more intense, telling Riley he only needed to graduate high school because the NHL was his future, and Aaron wasn't wrong. Riley caught lots of attention from scouts and coaches, and his dad never let him take a moment to rest, always saying he had to get better. He was drafted to the New Jersey Devils to play professionally in the first round of the draft.
