Steve received a phone call from his sister the day after he woke up. She explained that some men had indeed come after her, but that Donovan had arrived at just the right moment to protect her and Joan. She hadn't noticed until after the Russian had disposed of their assailants that Aunt Deb had been hit by a lost bullet and died instantly.

It had taken Mary a few hours to assimilate the news, but when she'd learned what Doris had been up to, and what state Steve and Charlie were in, she'd decided to move into the reserve with Donovan. The two of them were still dealing with all the formalities associated with Deb's death and her decision, but she hoped they would be able to set down their suitcases on the reserve within a month at the most. Steve was delighted at the idea of his sister living a few blocks from him. His fears about Mary allayed, Steve divided his time between looking after his man and enjoying the presence of his friends.

Danny and Chin had to leave again at the end of the week, while Charlie was still awake. Steve spent more time in bed, canceling his planned hikes and putting his business on hold. He talked to his man as much as possible, telling him that he missed him and needed him to wake up, that he needed him.

The wizard's body was warming up a little more every day, but never enough to reach a normal temperature. His features had softened, however, and he no longer seemed to be in pain. Jackub came by every day and was reassuring, but it wasn't enough for Steve, who felt increasingly resentful.

One morning, two weeks after their abduction, as he stepped out of the shower, he was frozen in his movements by his man's gaze on him.

"Oh my god, Charlie," he whispered before rushing to his bedside and kissing him. ¨How do you feel?¨

¨Cold.¨

¨That's normal.¨

¨Warm me up," begged the dragon caretaker, dropping his towel with a heavy gesture.

Steve slipped under the sheets and took his man in his arms, his sex reacting immediately which made Charlie smile against his skin. They did nothing, however, other than remain thus entwined for at least an hour before the Muggle extricated himself from this embrace.

"I'll be right back, I'll get you some breakfast and tell your parents," he whispered as he dressed.

From the moment his soulmate woke up, everything seemed to get better and better for Steve. It took almost a month for the dragon caretaker to fully recover, a month during which the Muggle took good care of him with Molly's help. The witch also met Mary and Joan and was delighted to help the young woman settle in. Her maternal instinct soon returned, and she was happy to look after Joan while Mary worked in Emmy's café.

Once Charlie had recovered, the couple found a new balance in their lives together, with their friends and in their work. It took a while for the British man to stop stressing out every time Steve crossed over to the Muggle side, but he eventually got over his traumas and their couple was all the better for it.

They enjoyed each other's company for the next few months, and a year after the horrific event that had so nearly destroyed them, Steve made a decision. He invited Charlie to a sophisticated Muggle restaurant on the pretext that he wanted to give him something else to remember over the nightmare. The redhead had changed into a red shirt and black jacket with black jeans. Steve wore a white shirt and, like Charlie, a black jacket and jeans. They had an excellent evening, but the former soldier was stressed and couldn't stop playing with a little box in his pants. He waited until they had finished their dessert before taking the box out of his pocket and dropping to one knee. He ignored the conversations stopping around them, his eyes riveted to his lover's moist ones.

"Charlie, my love, for the fifteen years we've been together, you've been my reason for living and the person who makes me happy. I thought I'd lost you, too many times and each time I thought my heart had been ripped from my chest, and I've had the certainty that I couldn't live without you. So, Charlie, will you marry me?"

Tears rolled down the cheeks of the wizard, who could only nod and draw Steve to his lips. Applause rang out around them and they parted smiling. The American took out the white gold ring, on the inside of which was engraved "Aloha au iā ʻoe e kuʻu aloha", from its case and placed it on Charlie's finger, who was beaming with happiness. They kissed once more, Steve settled the bill and they left the restaurant. As soon as they were out of sight, the wizard apparated them home to their room and undressed them with a spell. His impatience made Steve smile, but he was just as eager for his lover as he was for himself.

The two men kissed passionately as Charlie's hands moved down the soldier's body to prepare him. Their moans soon filled the room as it rose a few degrees. Neither of them wanted to wait and Steve wrapped his legs around his lover's strong waist, who pinned him against the wall. Charlie uttered a lubrication spell and a cool sensation seized Steve in his intimacy, just before it was replaced by his love's member making its way inside him. They groaned with pleasure as they finally became one, and the older man began to move without delay. Passion overwhelmed them as the thrusts grew in intensity and depth, and after an indeterminate length of time, they came together, crying out their pleasure against each other's lips.

They made love many times that night, telling each other their feelings over and over again. Their story had begun when Steve's life was in danger, both their lives had been threatened in the years they'd shared, but that night they knew they had no more threats on their shoulders and that they would love each other for the rest of their lives, and who knows, if they were ever ready for that, they might welcome a child into their home? But that was a question for another time, as this night was dedicated to their relationship, their love and their future together.
