Amber

He leads me through the trees at breakneck speed toward the exit. We just shot Mica into another world. What’s with the rush? We’re only a couple of hours away, and I’ll have to deal with my sister and the world. I’m not ready.
Estevan looks determined. His brows are drawn, and his mouth is twisted in a snarl.
“Slow down! Why are you so angry?”
I slam into him as he abruptly stops. Estevan’s frown deepens as he looks down at me. Uh oh, I’m about to get my ass chewed.
“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a vampire. I don’t run from anything. I give chase. The fact I’m running should scare the shit out of you.” He grates.
Well, it doesn’t. I’ve seen enough fast enough to never be spooked again, but I don’t tell him that. Instead, I ask;
“Why is he so strong?” I know Estevan has more power than a Mack truck. I’ve seen him in action. So, what makes Mica different?
Estevan drops his head and looks up to the sky like he’s praying for patience.
“We don’t have the time to get into it. Long story short, Mica is turning into lucifer. His power goes beyond anything on or off earth. He just doesn’t know it yet. If he did, we wouldn’t be here.”
Okay, that changes things. I nod my head toward the path in agreement. Estevan pauses, giving me a gentle kiss, and leans his forehead against mine.
“I promised your sister I’d bring you home safe, and I intend on keeping it.”
Is that the only reason? It’s reassuring but disappointing all at once. I wasn’t looking for a declaration of love, but it would be nice to know he has some sort of feelings for me. Estevan tips my chin and searches my eyes. He looks so vulnerable. I hold my breath for what he’s about to say.
“I made another promise the day I met you. I just didn’t know it yet... I promised myself. If I get you out of here, I’d learn to love again. I just couldn’t wait to start.”
My eyes well with tears at his heartfelt honesty. This time, I kiss him. It's passionate and filled with need. He growls, and when we break apart, I’m left with strength and hope. I’m ready to see my sister. I’m ready to go home.
The moon begins its descent as we near the exit. I feel like it’s all surreal, and I begin to get nervous once more. When I feel Estevan’s hand on my back, my nerves calm, and my stomach begins to settle. His effect on me is like medicine.
“Are you ready?” he asks. I look up at him, smiling.
“To get out of this crazy place? Absolutely!”
I place my hand in his, and we leave the plane together.
