As Calliope ascended the wooden steps into the Ravenclaw common room, she found herself entering a nearly empty, dimly lit main room. With a resigned sigh, she made her way to the next set of stairs, lamenting her luck at being sorted into one of the two houses perched on a towering spire.
After ascending several flights of stairs, Calliope finally reached her dormitory.
She knocked first, hoping to spare herself any awkward sights that might not be meant for her eyes. Knowing her roommate Cassandra Oakes, such encounters were always a possibility. Originally intended for four occupants, their previous roommates had opted for different accommodations, likely due to Cass and Cal's lively late-night discussions. Cassandra, however, insisted it was because they were "intimidated by our strong personalities."
"Who is it?" Cassandra's singsong voice chimed through the door.
"Your favorite girl in the whole world!" Cal replied in a matching tone.
"Rowena Ravenclaw?! Great to hear you've risen from the dead!"
"Haha, very funny. Now let me in!" Cal shot back, playfully rolling her eyes.
She heard Cassandra shuffle behind the door and quickly turned the knob to let her in. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" Cal said dramatically, placing a hand over her heart. "Cass, let me in, I just want to crash."
She stepped aside and welcomed the frustrated girl into the room.
"What's wrong, Calli?"
"Got detention for a week," Calliope grumbled, her frustration evident. "That damn Pettigrew, that asshole."
"Whoa," Cassandra gawked, her green eyes widening. "What happened to my beloved?"
Calliope threw herself onto her bed, choosing to ignore Cassandra's playful tone. She recounted everything, from their escapade in the Forbidden Forest to the uncertain fate of the boys and her punishment.
"Damn, Cal. Haven't heard you curse like that since fifth year when the boys dyed your hair pink," Cassandra remarked with a hint of amusement. "I like it though."
"Perhaps you should get used to it," Calliope groaned as she sprawled out on her bed. With their other two roommates absent, the girls had ingeniously pushed the vacant beds next to theirs, creating a larger sleeping space.
"C'mon, it'll be okay. Just a few dreaded detentions with Slughorn, or maybe Flitwick, or even Binns. It's nothing to worry about! Think on the bright side," Cassandra said, trying to ease her frustration.
"I mean, when you put it that way, maybe it will be..." Calliope mumbled from under a pillow. "But it's only been one week since the school year started, and I've already got a week-long detention!"
A chuckle escaped from the girl across from her. "Now that is just funny. Stop being so angry, Cal! You're bringing down the mood. Let's have some fun, hm?"
"Cass... what kind of fun are you suggesting?" Calliope asked suspiciously, her eyebrows arching as she eyed her friend with curiosity.
The blonde-haired girl grinned mischievously as she pulled out a fresh bottle of firewhiskey.
"Cassie!"
"Hey, it's your call. Want to have some fun? No classes tomorrow, so you can relax if you'd like..." She teased, waving the glass bottle in front of the other girl's face.
"Fine. Pour me a shot—or twelve."
"Attagirl."
The girls sat on their blue shag carpet. Cass poured two shots for them and placed the bottle on the cold hardwood floor.
