—————————————If Maria were to meet a genie who only answers to one wish, it'd be money. Or the death of her stepbrother. Actually she'd pick money first, then hire a hit man to kill her stepbrother.
Said stepbrother was currently rummaging through all her possessions, which wasn't as much as you'd think; she could fit them all neatly into one briefcase with extra room for her shoes and maybe fit in a will to live.
"What do you think you're doing, Doug," she sighed, a hand carefully massaging her forehead. With her other hand she held a black cup of coffee. He jumped, shoulders tensing for a singular second before spinning around with an expression that reminded her of a deer in headlights.Doug was a man with a small stature. He barely reached up to her shoulders, and she was no tall woman. He was older than her by three years, and at 25 years old had managed to secure a well paying position in who knows what career. She remembered him doing something in business, maybe. Maria was temporarily staying at his place until she got a stable job. To say it had been relaxing was a complete and utter lie.
It had been weeks since she first arrived and Doug seemed to get more eager to be rid of her with every passing day. She can't exactly blame him. With every day her guilt grew and festered at the back of her mind. Truthfully she was also looking for another place to call her own.
"Nothing, I uh." Doug scratched the back of his neck, trying to look sheepish but failing at it. His shoulders finally slumped, holding up a small necklace that glinted in the sunlight from the kitchen blinds. "Don't you think some of these stuff you could... sell?"
She knew exactly what he was talking about. And her answer remained the same resolute "No." as it'd been for the past five arguments this same discussion has led to.
"It's just... you need to..." he grappled with the words, shoulders raising to try and find the next ones, "let go, maybe? It's been two years, Mary."
"I'm not in the mood for this today." They both knew it's never as easy as just 'letting go'.
Doug opened his mouth to protest, but ultimately, and for the greater good, shut it. With a deep sigh, he dropped both the subject matter and the necklace.Maria picked up the necklace and put it on. It felt like she could breathe again. While Doug made a cup of coffee, she decided to let out the good news she'd been saving for this morning. "I have a job interview today."
"Finally," he said, looking like he appreciated the change. He took a sip and grimaced. "When you get that job, don't forget to pay me back every penny you owe me."
She rolled her eyes. "Whatever." And with that, he disappeared down the hallway, presumably off to do his paperwork or something. Maria didn't know what he worked as; he'd swerve the question every time she asked. She didn't have enough time to find out and if he didn't want to tell her it was for a reason. Even as curious as she was, she'd respect his privacy.
Blame it on her love of horror movies and novels, but it still didn't stop her from speculating on whether or not he's a serial killer all by herself. She didn't exactly have friends to share these theories with. And the last one, well...
Finished with her own cup of coffee, she dragged on her clothing, did her makeup despite the lack of energy that couldn't be fixed with caffeine, and hurried off with a quick "I'm off, then." which was met with a muffled "Be safe!"
With high shoulders and a straight posture, she briskly walked off, borrowing Doug's red and flashy new bicycle which he'd nicknamed Old Betty — Maria didn't see the appeal of names to items. She'd borrowed Old Betty temporarily. Not like he knew or anything, hell, he had a car and a license if he so wanted to go somewhere.
Five kilometers in and she'd completely regretted it. The sun reflected on the bicycle, completely blinding her eyes. She had to squint for the remainder of the path. It was a real headache.
She'd finally reached the corporate building that stood from pure simple reduced shapes and made from 90% glass, making it the sun's child. She wasn't in the position to complain, however. She was lucky to even be considered. Her resume was nothing short of a disaster. With too little time to fix it up, she'd just let it rot there for a while.
Leaving Old Betty in the parking and with one final ring of her bell for good measure, she'd quickly jogged to the front door. All ambience was gone the instant she stepped foot in that place. She could hear lives of corporate boredom catching up with her. She strode up to the receptionist with wavering confidence.
Here comes the part she's practiced aloud.
"Good morning. How may I help you, ma'am?"
"Hi. My name is Maria Hanana. I have a job interview with... Luigi Salchavez?" Nailed it.
The receptionist flipped through that long list of hers. Recognition dawned on her face. "Ah, yes. Please take the elevator up to the first floor and enter the first door to your right. He is waiting for you. Good luck!"
"Than you, ma'am." Maria nodded to her in acknowledgment and hastily left for the elevator.
As the elevator ascended, she rolled her tense shoulders. It's just a job interview. Oh, but it's not just a job interview. This interview will determine her entire future.
There are always more jobs, she tried convincing herself.
She opened the door and stepped in.
PART TWO COMING OUT SOON!!!!
