Today was the first day of the fourth quarter at school. Everyone was excited because it meant only nine more weeks until school was officially over. Theia woke up at 6 a.m. like she did everyday for school. She got around like always, and ate a coconut yogurt for breakfast. Her routine never changed. Her hair was straightened, half of it pulled up into a claw clip. She was wearing a brown cropped tank top with a grey cropped zip up jacket over top, baggy Levi jeans, and a pair of Air Forces. She finished her makeup off with lipgloss and packed her book bag. She walked down the stairs and out of her house to her car while scrolling on her phone. A specific Instagram post stuck out to her.

Theia physically recoiled at the post. She rolled her eyes before closing out the app and opening Spotify. She connected her phone to her car and pressed shuffle on her car playlist. The first song that played was Lost Cause by Billie Eilish. She turned up the volume and sang along as she pulled out of her driveway. Theia lived in the middle of town so the drive from her house to the school only took about ten minutes.

The song ended and Nowadays by Lil Skies and Landon Cube came on. She immediately skipped it. She couldn't bare listening to Chris's and her song. The fact that it will never be their song again, and that Chris literally went against all the lyrics of the song made Theia cringe every time she heard it. She didn't pay attention to the next song that came on because her mind was flooded with memories of Chris, once again. How could he do that to her? He's the one who picked out their song. The lyrics literally go, 'Nowadays I'm too cool for a girlfriend.' And nowadays, Chris is too cool for a best friend.

Theia tried to forget all of it as she pulled into the school parking lot. She parked beside Aurora like she has every day this year. There was only three minutes until the late bell rang so Theia grabbed her book bag and walked to where Rory was waiting for her. "Hey," Rory said as she dragged the y. Theia gave her a small smile in response. Theia headed for the school and Rory could immediately tell something was wrong. "Are you okay?" Rory whispered so that nobody else could hear. "Yup," Theia responded, still not able to shake the feeling from the song. "You know you can tell me what's wrong T," Rory tried to comfort her. "I'm just thinking about Chris again, I miss him so, so much Rory. I don't understand how he could throw a lifelong friendship away like that," Theia confesses.

"I know girl," Rory placed a hand on Theia's shoulder as they walked. "My offer's still on the table," Rory shrugged her shoulders and she started to put her locker combination in. Theia was thankful her locker was right beside Rory's. That's how they became best friends. Theia begins to remember the day her and Rory met. She was standing at her locker trying to put the code in as she repeatedly failed. "Shit," Theia mumbled to herself. "Do you need help?" Rory asked from beside her. "Yeah, sorry," she said as she backed up to allow Rory to try. "12-34-10," Theia informed her. Rory had opened the locker with ease and Theia thanked her. Every day after that they made small talk at their lockers and somehow along the way, they became best friends. "No, I am not letting you fight Chris, he's literally a man," Theia laughs as she grabs her book for english. "That boy has arms the size of a fucking twig, it'd be like fighting a twelve year old girl," Aurora laughs as she closes her locker. "Whatever," Theia laughs.

The late bell rings and Theia notices they're the only ones in the hallway. "Oh shit," Rory says as she darts down the hallway for geometry, and Theia bolts the opposite way for english. Theia opened the english classroom door as quietly as possible, trying not to draw attention to her. It didn't work. "Ms. Harmony. Have an excuse for being late?" Mrs. Retta bellows. She was always intimidating. Theia tries to think of a lie as fast as possible, "my locker got jammed. Sorry." "Find a seat," Mrs. Retta says before going back to talking about today's lesson.

Theia always loved english class. She loved reading and writing but this class, she hated. For two reasons. Firstly, Mrs. Retta was mean, intimidating, unforgiving, and came up with the worst assignments. Secondly, Mrs. Retta chose seats. And with Theia's luck, she got placed right beside Chris. Yes, that Chris. The one who repeatedly ditched her for his new girlfriend. "You're late," Chris mumbles as Theia sits down. "I know," Theia responds blandly. Theia puts her book bag on the back of her chair and pulls out her book. "What page?" Theia asks, not wanting to make small talk, but it was a genuine question. "Look at the board," Chris says without even looking at her.

Chris was the only one who knew why he stopped hanging around Theia. He wouldn't even tell his triplet brothers. It was because of Rachel, like anyone could guess. But not the reason anyone had thought of. It's true, Rachel was jealous of Theia and his relationship. She hated how much time the two spent together. But Chris stopped hanging out with Theia for his own reasons. And it was the same reason he started dating Rachel. Rachel was actually obsessed with Chris, since the day she first saw him. Rachel had tried talking to Chris before but he had always ignored her. Until he realized, he was in love with Theia Harmony.

That was the day he knew he needed a distraction. He needed a girlfriend. Rachel was an easy choice because he knew she'd immediately say yes. But even she wasn't enough. Yeah she was conveniently attractive and popular, but she wasn't Chris's type. To be honest he never had a crush on her, and now he's going on almost ten months of lying to everyone. To Rachel, to Theia, to Matt, to Nick, to the whole school. He didn't love Rachel. He couldn't. The only girl he could ever love, he couldn't have. He knew Theia would never think of him like he thought of her. And even after dating Rachel, all he could think about was Theia.

So he knew he had to distance himself. He started spending all his time with Rachel, leaving Theia on read, not finalizing plans, and eventually even ignoring her. He knew it hurt her, but it would hurt them both even more if he had told her the truth. Because then he would be left heartbroken and she would be left without a best friend. And he figured it would be better to just leave her confused.
