One year later, Jiyeon stood in the same corner of the hospital library, a quiet smile playing on her lips as she watched the world outside shift from afternoon light to the soft hues of dusk. It was strange how much could change in a year—how much could stay the same, yet feel so different.
The hospital still smelled faintly of antiseptic, the sounds of doctors and nurses bustling through the hallways never quite faded, but to Jiyeon, it all felt like background noise now. The place that had once been a source of exhaustion and stress had become part of her routine, a rhythm she had learned to move to. But her days here were no longer defined by long shifts and the weight of constant worry. Now, she shared them with someone else.
Wonwoo had become as much a part of her life as her work, and though they'd navigated their own trials and challenges, they had found something deeply real in each other. He'd been discharged from the hospital months ago, and their connection had only grown stronger since then. They had their own little world now—quiet, steady, and full of small, meaningful moments.
They met here, in the library, more often than she could count, their chairs pushed close together as they talked about everything and nothing. Some days they simply sat in silence, each reading their own book, but the other's presence was always a comforting constant.
Jiyeon closed the book she had been holding, running her thumb over the worn cover. It was the same book Wonwoo had been reading when they first met—The Secret Garden. She had never imagined how much that little piece of coincidence would come to mean.
It had been one of their first shared connections: a mutual love for stories that transcended time and place. And now, here she was, in the library, surrounded by hundreds of other books, but it was this one that she kept returning to. It was like the beginning of something—a new chapter in her life that was still unfolding, still full of promise.
As the door chimed softly, Jiyeon didn't need to look up. She already knew who it was. The sound of his footsteps was so familiar to her now, it was as if her heart could sense him before her eyes could.
"Hey," Wonwoo greeted softly, his voice warm with affection.
"Hey," Jiyeon replied, her smile wide and easy as she looked up at him.
He leaned against the bookshelf, eyes lingering on her with a tenderness that made her chest flutter, even after all this time. "You know, I've been thinking," he said, his tone playful.
"Uh-oh," Jiyeon teased, raising an eyebrow. "Should I be worried?"
Wonwoo chuckled, shaking his head. "Not at all. I was just thinking about how lucky I am."
Jiyeon's heart skipped. "Lucky?"
"Yeah," he said, stepping closer to her. "Lucky to have you in my life. To be able to share all of this... with you." He gestured vaguely at the library, but Jiyeon knew what he meant. It wasn't just the space—it was everything they had built together. The quiet moments, the laughter, the trust, the love.
Her eyes softened, and she reached out to take his hand, their fingers naturally intertwining. "I'm the lucky one," she said quietly, squeezing his hand. "I never thought I could find something like this. Something so... real."
Wonwoo smiled, leaning in just enough to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Neither did I," he murmured. "But here we are."
"Here we are," Jiyeon echoed, her heart full.
The world outside the library continued to turn. The hospital carried on with its routines, the patients came and went, and the books sat waiting on their shelves for the next reader to discover them. But in this moment, Jiyeon knew that this—her life with Wonwoo—was the story she would keep reading, over and over. The one that would never end.
As they stood there, hand in hand, Jiyeon felt something that she had never quite experienced before—a sense of peace, of belonging, of home. It wasn't perfect, and it wasn't without its challenges, but it was theirs. And that was enough.
"Are you ready for dinner?" Wonwoo asked, his voice warm with a hint of mischief.
Jiyeon laughed softly. "I thought you'd never ask."
And with that, they walked out of the library together, side by side, ready to start a new chapter.
Together.
