Long ago, when man still ruled over Terraria, the world was thrust into a terrible war, a war between the natural and the artificial. Presiding over the natural was Plantera, a sorcerer who all but changed his entire form to become one with the earth he worshipped. His creations brought plague and infection to every living thing, changing them as they changed him. Presiding over the artificial was Ocram, an alchemist whose fascination with technology turned a dark corner as he thrust his consciousness into his most powerful of machines. His creations brought mindlessness to humans as the technology he made forced themselves to become advanced automatons that fought for a cause they knew nothing about.
The gods could only watch as the two began to endanger civilization, being at this point their divine intervention would be too much for humans, too much to the point where helping would turn them all into dust. They could only watch, wait, and hope for a miracle to occur.
Things only grew worse for humanity. Planterans and Ocramites battled across the surface, laying waste to the towns and villages in their way and changing the people into their own personal soldiers. The destruction was not enough. Soon they began to mold their master creations. Plantera reached deep into the earth and grabbed the richest soil. A piece of his primeval magic was used as the heart. Heating it all in the fires of the Underworld, he molded these pieces of earth into the mighty Golem. Ocram matched his creation by building three mechanical menaces, each inspired by three of the great generals of the Cthulhu Wars. He named them the Destroyer, Skeletron Prime, and The Twins, Retinazer and Spazmatism.
These monstrosities wreaked havoc across the land, destroying everything in their wake. Finally, the gods said it was time to intervene. The destruction of man wasn't worth the destruction of the whole of Terraria. But as they were to descend, the great and powerful demon Agaroth showed himself before them. He was a horrifying creature, a wall of flesh made from the victims he slaughtered, their souls forever in torment within his form. He said to the gods that he had a plan, a plan to end the war. Though they didn't trust him, they were desperate, forced to agree to listen.
He said that with his powers, he could send Ocram, Plantera, and their creations into a deep slumber, but only for a short time. During this time, the gods could send heroes in their name to wipe out the warmongers that ravaged the land, as well as guides to help them along their quest. In return, they would give him land to claim as his own, a land of blood, corruption, and evil. Reluctantly, the gods agreed, but Agaroth had a catch.
He said that the heroes memories must be wiped, allowing a chance for them to choose freely on their own whether to fight or not in the end. Also, one of these heroes would be sent in Agaroth's stead, to balance out righteousness with corruption.
With the plan set, Ocram and Plantera slept as the deities looked for heroes to finally put a stop to them, heroes to finally save the world from complete and utter destruction...
