Tropes: 1. Romance.

The first time I saw him, was in that hospital room. I was sitting beside dad bed. The doctors had told us we had only three weeks. I was still refusing to believe it, but Dad had accepted the outcome long before the doctors predicted it.

I was so lost that I did not even notice him walking in, but when dad laughter brought me back to the present.

He was tall and exactly the way he looked in the pictures. Probably a bit more handsome. I had never met him or spoken to him before that day, but I had heard of him a lot from my father.

Both the men started talking while all I could focus on was the happiness on my father's face. It was rare, the medication and treatment had stolen the life out of him and left him a shell of a man.

I was slipping back into my head when something my father said made my eyes go wide.

"Marry my daughter." He had said and the man standing in front of his bed had agreed.

Did I have a choice in the matter? Yes, I did. I could have said no.

But then what would I have done three weeks later?

My dad was the only family I had, and he was on borrowed time. Marrying him, sounded much better than being left alone in the world.

The next day, we were married in the small chapel in the hospital and he helped me move into his house, before going off on his next tour.

Exactly three weeks later Dad passed away and I was living in the house of a man who I did not really know but who was my husband now.

I continued my small business. The grief of losing dad was a weight I could not shed, but his small texts asking me about my day helped.

Which turned into long emails as the weeks passed and then the occasional phone calls and sometimes the handwritten letter, he used to send me were a great help.

I was getting back on my feet after Dad, and he had become the pillar I could hold on to despite being thousands of miles away from me.

Edmond Parson, my husband was returning home after a year-long tour. My dad was a lieutenant commander in the army and Edmond was a part of his platoon.

Just like me Edmond too had no family, and that's probably the reason my father took him under his wing while he was still serving in the army. Too bad the cancer had taken his life way too early at the age of 56.

22 is not an ideal age for a girl to get married, but I trusted my father's choice and married Edmond.

I was driving to the base to pick him up, and the most recent letter he wrote me was lying in the passenger's seat. I might have read it one too many times. But every time I read it, it made me cry and my heart flutter. And I had just received it yesterday.

Kate,

Next week this time we will probably have tea together. I'm coming back on the 27th. Finally, this tour is over and till now I'm in one piece. Hope to stay that way till I see you again.

I know in the past year we have talked a lot, in texts, emails, letters, and on calls, but I never had the guts to tell you this.

Partly because you were grieving the captain's death and partly because I wanted to get to know you before I said this.

"I love you." I have since you were 18. I know we hadn't met before, but the moment I saw you in the hospital room, I knew it was you for me.

You may not know this, but your father is a sneaky man, ever since you graduated and started your own flower shop, your dad used to show me photos of you and tell me about you.

He made me curious about who you were, in a way I was never curious about any person. Let alone a woman.

I am sure he sent you a lot of photos of us, especially the single shots he had with me, and trying to do the same with you too. The guy was probably setting us up way before the diseases claimed him.

I don't think you might have given a single thought about the guy who is always next to your dad in the pictures because you actually had a life.

Once captain dropped a picture of you from his wallet and instead of returning it to him like a normal person, I kept it in my wallet. You were probably 20 in the picture and I still have it. Your smiling face gave me courage, back then and it still gives me courage now.

I know we did not marry in an ideal situation and if things were all well and the captain was still alive, you might have picked up another man for yourself.

But for me it was always you, it had always been you and it will always be you.

I'm sorry if I'm creeping you out, but this is my truth. I know now you're in a better place to receive this information, and I really hope that we can make this work.

Will you come to receive me at the base? I'd love to see you there. No one has ever come to receive me before and having you there would me the world to me.

Yours,

Ed.

I reached the base and noticed the whole parking lot full of cars. Wives, kids, parents, girlfriends, friends, family members everyone was there to pick up their soldier and I was there to pick up mine.

I had done this so many times with my dad, but this time it was different. This time my heart was fluttering and a silly smile was pasted on my face.

I was looking all over to find him when suddenly I spotted him in the distance looking at me with the same silly smile.

I ran towards him; the piece of paper clutched tightly in my hand and hugged him...

To be continued...
