I do agree respect is earned and not freely given. I am the type to treat people the way they treat me. Its fair.
However. I also give a certain amount of respect to people i first meet. They havent done anything to make me disrespect them but not give enough respect. I gage it on interactions.
Some people need to be given certain respect to as well. Such as a boss. Even if we dont like them we deal with it to get a check or till we find a new job. Thats just survival.
