-Turtle POV-
Turtle came home from hunting soon after dark. He found Kinkajou resting in her hammock, fiddling with a small flower, absentmindedly turning her scales a dark shade of light blue and yellow. Kinkajou had her wings flung over a purple and pink dragonet that was sleeping on Kinkajou's chest.
Turtle smiled at their daughter Dewdrop, and walked over to Kinkajou's hammock. Their hut was dark, and the only lights were fireflies flying in and out of the leaf windows.
"Kinkajou." Turtle whispered, not wanting to wake up Dewdrop. "What's wrong?" Turtle had studied what colours meant what emotions on RainWing scales, and he'd learned that dark blue meant worried, and yellow meant excited. He was only asking about the worried part.
His wife turned her head to look at him and give him a kind smile. "Nothing's wrong, it's just..." she trailed off. But Turtle knew when something was wrong. "Tell me, please." He begged. "I want to help."
Kinkajou reached down with one talon to take his. "Alright, my love." She whispered. "The egg rocked a bit today. It almost fell out of its nest. I heard a tapping sound. It's almost ready to hatch."
Turtle looked to the side and saw the pink and yellow egg that sat in the warmest corner of the hut, near the dinner table. They had already decided on the name for their new dragonet; Waterlily. Kinkajou thought it represented both the RainWing and the SeaWing tribes.
"So then why do you worry?" He asked. Kinkajou's expression turned concerned. "Just...what if the dragonet that comes out from that egg will have a strange condition? We live in a world where people think hybrids are unusual and weird. I want her to be accepted, loved."
"She will be accepted. And loved. I mean, we've already got one beautiful, amazing dragonet." Turtle nodded at sleeping Dewdrop. "And even if she will come out strange, we will love her anyway. We will teach the world to accept her. There's nothing wrong with our children. There never has, and there never will be." He finished confidently.
Kinkajou stared at him. Finally, after a long, silent moment, she cracked a smile. "Wow." She said. "I think I love you." Her eyes had that same twinkle they had when Turtle had first met her.
He grinned at Kinkajou. "Only the best for you." Turtle pulled her down from the hammock, taking Dewdrop from her and setting her down on a comfortable pile of blankets.
Then the two dragons wrapped their wings around each other. Turtle smiled, inhaling Kinkajou's scent.
Nothing can go wrong as long as we're together.
We have this bond, and now we finally have a home together, and a family.
A new, amazing family.
***time skip***
Turtle awoke in the morning to Kinkajou flapping her wings in his face. "Wake up!" She hollered. "A messenger is at the door!"
She dragged Turtle to the hut door and swung it open. Outside stood a pale blue SeaWing Turtle instantly recognized. "Fin?" Turtle asked, rubbing his eyes. "Seriously, you're here, Fin?!" Turtle's brother grinned and patted him on the back. "Long time no see, Turtle." Fin turned to both of them. "I'm here for—" he was interrupted by a bright purple dragonet flinging herself in his face yelling "WHO ARE YOU?"
"Dewdrop, settle down." Turtle said with a laugh. "Fin, this is our daughter, Dewdrop." Turtle glanced at his daughter. "Dewdrop, say hello to your uncle." Dewdrop immediately landed, staring at Fin with wide eyes. Finally, she grinned and flew up, and plopped herself in Fin's talons. "UNCLE?" Dewdrop shrieked. "Dad! You never mentioned I had an uncle!"
"32 uncles, actually." Fin said. Dewdrop's mouth dropped open as Fin added hurriedly "and 3 aunts." Turtle groaned and gave his brother a look. Kinkajou cracked up as Dewdrop turned to Turtle, shaking her little talon at him. "I have 35 aunts and uncles?" She asked angrily. "Why did you never tell me?!"
"Sorry." Turtle shrugged and patted her on the head, though he was never an expert at calming little dragonets down.
"So, why are you visiting?" Kinkajou asked, trying to change the subject. Turtle hoped it would work. "A message from the SeaWings." Fin started. He took a deep breath before saying more. "From Anemone." Kinkajou groaned. The way she thought about Anemone didn't really improve in the past few years. "What, is she asking permission to put a spell on us?" Kinkajou demanded, but Turtle knew she was kidding. "Oh, please tell me she isn't Queen of the SeaWings right now." Kinkajou said, staring at Fin, waiting for his answer. "She's not." Fin assured Kinkajou. "Her sister Auklet is. And Anemone is inviting Turtle to the SeaWing Summer Palace. The Queen has changed some things about it since when Tsunami visited."
"But she's only inviting him?!" Kinkajou asked furiously. "I mean, I'm happy that you get to visit your evil sister, Turtle, but seriously?"
"Well, Anemone said you can bring your family." Fin explained. Then he muttered to himself, "Although I think she means 'if you must, bring your peasant wife and your dragonet', since that's what she said."
"Alright." Turtle said, wanting to end this awkward conversation.
"Let's go see my sister."
