"It is not the bruises on the body that hurt. It is the wounds of the heart and the scars of the mind"
-The quote that describes my life. Many times in life, we fail to acknowledge mental, emotional, and verbal abuse. We tend to overlook it, or compare it to physical scars and assume that it's not a big deal. In reality, mental abuse can be much worse than any physical mark or bruise scarred on one's self. Physical scars heal. It could take a day, two weeks, or a year. But eventually, the scars heal or get better than what they were before.
Mental scars are the ones that never heal.
It's like smashing glass on the floor. Obviously it breaks. And once it's broken, that's it. It's shattered for good.
Apologizing doesn't heal the problem, and when you try to put the broken pieces back together, they may stick, but you can still see the cracks. You can still see the brokenness.
Not only do mental scars never heal, but they could lead to the end of a life. Many people go as far as committing suicide due to words that hurt them so much, that they feel a sense of hopelessness. They're caused to believe that nothing will ever get better.
You might wonder why I care so much. Well, truth be told, I've been ignored for my struggle with mental abuse, due to the fact that it's not physical abuse. I've tried everything, least it feels like everything. But as long as it's not physical, no one really cares.
I feel like I have no way to fully express myself, and that I'm forced to bottle up my emotions. I can't do that anymore.
So, this is my story. I, Amber Lloyd, have created this story to share my struggle with mental scars, that have slowly but surely created within me a scarred heart.
