To Evie Gray, Lottie Matthews was a goddess. She worshipped the ground Lottie stood on, honoured to be considered worthy of standing in Lottie's presence—let alone be her friend. They'd been friends for years, and all that time had been spent yearning for one another; so close yet so far away. But all of that would change after her team's plane crashes on the way to nationals, Evie slowly discovers that there was more Lottie Matthews than she realised. Another reason to worship her? Or perhaps a reason she should fear her? Even though Evie admired her, there were secrets that Lottie kept from her—secrets that, if they got out, would ruin how everyone perceived her. She couldn't think of anything worse than losing her friendship with Evie.

That's why, when Lottie starts spiralling without her medication, and everyone turns to her for guidance and leadership, Evie realises that she's a goddess alright—just not one chosen by the wilderness. Still, Evie had blind faith in Lottie. She'd worship this love, even if it turned out that Lottie was a false god.
