Two months later
"D'you need me to pick you up?"
"No. Don't worry about it," Rebecca told her best friend over the receiver. She dropped her luggage beside her feet to hail a nearby cab, sighing in relief when the vehicle slowed to a stop. "Don't you have work, anyway?"
Yeah, but- "
"Exactly". She entered the cab, telling the driver a soft thanks before telling him her destination. "We'll catch up when you're no longer on the clock. We'll get lunch. I'll use the time to situate myself, do some shopping maybe".
Nadia grumbled. "I'm technically not on the clock right now".
"But, you're on call. Are you not?"
Nadia said nothing, walking through her mostly barren apartment. There were still boxes stacked on top of boxes, all strewn across the space but she really couldn't get herself to care.
The only pieces of furniture out were her bed, two dining chairs, a coffee table, and a couch. There was no television, no photos, no...personality. It was all so incredibly plain.
"I'll take that as a yes".
The two friends hadn't seen each other since they parted ways at the airport a little over two months ago. And, Nadia was overly eager for a familiar face. She looked around the apartment somberly, a gloss of pain overcoming her eyes as a heavy sigh fell past her lips.
"Hey," Rebecca's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. "I know you miss me, but we've been apart over two months. What's a few more hours, hm?" She sensed her sudden change of mood, trying to lighten the conversation back up again.
"You're right".
"Aren't I always?" She smiled. "God, I don't know how you do it, Nadia. Been in this cab over fifteen minutes and we've barely moved an inch. How on earth do you get to work on time?"
"I walk".
Rebecca rolled her eyes. "Pass".
"You could use the subway".
"Hard pass". She did a mini dance in her head when the car started moving again. "By the way, thank you so much for the heads up on the weather over here," the sarcasm was dripping off every word. "It's almost April and I'm pretty sure it was snowing when I got off the plane this morning".
"What can I say?" Nadia shrugged. "The world is ending".
Rebecca hummed in thought. "Do you know any good eateries around here? That airplane food was not it". Her stomach churned at the mere memory.
She began spitting out restaurants and diners as she snatched her keys off the counter top and practically ran out the door. Nadia couldn't take being in there, being alone, for much longer.
She'd rather throw herself into work than spend another minute in the confines of those stupid four white walls she now calls her home.

"Hey, Ms Ohaz," Georgia Donovan, a clinical nurse, waved at her in greeting from the other end of the corridor.
She gave a tiny wave back, smiling at the older woman. "Hey, Nurse Donovan".
"I didn't know you were coming in today". Georgia looked confused. "Your name wasn't on the board".
Nadia shrugged. "Just felt like it, y'know? Get ahead on some paper work".
"Well, it's always good to see you," Georgia said, now standing in front of Nadia. She pat her on her shoulder. "Lunch?"
"Uh," Nadia began. "Sorry, but I already have plans". She pulled out her key and opened up her office door. "Maybe next time?"
