My life started out pretty normal. I went to school, hated math the most, the thought of ever having children grossed me out, I couldn't ever see myself dating a boy-okay, I guess that's not as normal. Regardless, there was nothing of any importance or difference in my life really. Until my 16th birthday.
Yeah, all those folk tales people hear about a magical being-mostly witches-gaining their abilities on their sixteenth birthday? They aren't lying.
And before you even consider referencing Harry Potter magic, it's nothing like that. No school, no slightly concerning headmasters or odd dark wizard villians with a weird hatred of non magical people...to an extent.
I'm getting side tracked here. Anyways, my whole life was flipped on its axis the day my powers were unlocked.
I didn't really expect anything to happen seeing as how none of my family members were magical or anything close to the sort, so I ended up just laughing it off when my mom brought up the whole witch power thing before school.
"Have fun today, sweetie. Careful with your emotions, it is your sixteenth birthday after all, and you know what people say..." Mom said with a teasing smile and a wink.
I rolled my eyes and laughed a bit, grabbing my lunch from the counter. "Ha, ha. Very funny, Mom. I'm not a little kid anymore. I know the stories are just silly things people tell their kids when they're little." I kissed her cheek. "See you after school, love you."
"Love you too, Cadence."
I smiled at her and walked out of the door so I could make it to the bus stop in time.
I climbed on the bus when it arrived and sat in my usual spot next to my best friend, Arya Duman.
"Hey, Duman," I grinned and nudged her with my shoulder.
She shoved me in return and we both laughed before she smiled back at me, "Sup, Kingsley. So, you like you're gonna get magical powers today?"
"Seriously, you too? No, I don't because those stories are fake." I shook my head slightly before looking at her again. "Do you think you're gonna get powers?"
She grinned. "Fingers crossed." She joked. "I still think we need to do a joint hangout, girl. It's not everyday that someone is best friends with their birthday twin!"
"And I still say no party at all. Just us hanging together like usual. We might share the same birthday, but we are totally opposites when it comes to social interaction."
Arya held her hands up in surrender. "Fine, fine. I'm sorry. Just us and a lot of movies and junk food. The real question is...whose house this time?"
"Yours, obviously. You have the best snacks."
"True. Okay, my place it is."
We high fived each other and then started talking about random things until the bus pulled up to Oak Hills High School.
Arya and I got off the bus together and walked inside the building before going our separate ways since we didn't have a class together until lunch.
My schedule went something like this. First period was my history class. Having that first thing in the morning almost guaranteed I would end up dozing off which happened more times than I'd like to admit. Third period was science, my favorite core class by far. It was my best grade, and I guess it helped that the teacher was my favorite science teacher in existence. Fourth period was sadly math. I absolutely despised the subject, but I was oddly good at it. Right after that, though, was lunch. The only class where I could meet up with Arya again and calm my nerves. Fifth period was my chorus class. I have mixed feelings about it because sometimes it's the best class ever and we have lots of fun, but sometimes we just get yelled at the whole period. Sixth period was ELA, and I absolutely loved my teacher in that class too. She was pretty chill and let us talk with classmates so long as we didn't get too loud and were working. My last period of the day was art, the best possible way to end the day in my opinion. It was my calmest class and allowed me to just relax and take it slow. Art really was my happy place.
I was walking from my math class to the cafeteria when I got a massive headache. I shook my head and tried to ignore it as I continued walking to meet up with Arya.
I sat down at our usual table and waited for my friend to get her food from the lunch line. When she sat across from me, her face was full of concern.
"Woah, girl. You don't look so good. You feeling alright?" She reached across the table and felt my forehead, instantly pulled her hand back. "Geez! You're burning up."
"Am I? Weird. It could just be from my headache I got on the way over here." I shrugged it off and set my own hand on my forehead.
"Not a chance, come on." Arya grabbed my wrist and pulled me to my feet.
I was about to ask where she was dragging me off to, but before I could even form the first word of my sentence, my headache flared up again and I crumpled to the floor.
