As my consciousness returned, I found myself ensconced in the gentle embrace of sea grass, the ebb and flow of the current a soothing balm. Struggling against the remnants of sand and sediment that bound me, I marveled at the vibrant tapestry of life teeming around me. Yet, as I sought to reclaim my bearings, a startling realization dawned—I had undergone a profound transformation, my legs now fused into ethereal fins, a testament to the ocean's power. I ceased my strokes and surrendered to the salty embrace of the waves, observing a peculiar vessel gliding overhead, its wake trailing behind like a miniature tempest. Sensing I had drifted far from the safety of the island, I descended towards the partially shattered coral reef, seeking refuge for the night. My people had always warned of the ocean's dangers after dark, urging caution. Navigating the labyrinthine twists of the reef, I sought a sheltered alcove to rest, eventually finding solace within an abandoned eel den. My respite proved timely, for in the distance, a group of white-bellied sharks prowled the reef's perimeter. Though smaller than those native to our waters, these predators still posed a formidable threat. It struck me how everything seemed diminished since my awakening, save for the enigmatic structures dotting the horizon. As days passed since my emergence from the reef, I gradually honed my swimming skills, albeit resembling more a hapless bird than a seasoned fisherman. Despite my efforts, my search for clues regarding my people's whereabouts yielded naught but seagrass and coral. Memories of my family and our idyllic life in the reefs weighed heavily upon me, especially thoughts of my mother, her kindness overshadowed by the grip of the Sickness. The Sickness had plagued our people for generations, its toll evident in the makeshift huts erected on the far side of the island. I recalled visiting my mother, confined to her sickbed, her window serving as our only means of connection. Her passing, like so many before her, marked by a solemn ritual—driftwood coffins adrift on the boundless sea, a final offering to its depths.Gazing at the horizon, where metal behemoths churned the waves, I pondered the unfamiliar landscape. These lands bore little resemblance to my village, where life teemed beneath azure waves and laughter echoed in the ocean's embrace. Yet amidst the unfamiliar, a familiar serenade beckoned—a chorus of bubble blowers, their tranquil melodies a balm to my weary soul.Swimming towards the melodic strains, I encountered a mother and calf, their gentle presence a comforting reminder of the ocean's embrace. "May I swim with you?" I ventured, receiving a subtle affirmation in return. Side by side, we traversed the depths, the calf's playful antics a brief respite from my solitude. Our reverie was shattered by the approach of a colossal metal vessel, its intrusion disrupting the tranquility of the sea. With a heavy heart, I watched the bubble blowers vanish into the abyss, leaving me alone to confront the enigma unfolding before me—a mysterious box, its eerie chime reverberating through the depths.
Summoning all my strength, I propelled myself towards the enigmatic object, its metallic exterior adorned with a small glass circle that pulsed with an ominous red light. Tentatively, I prodded the device with my tail, expecting a reaction, yet met with silence. Undeterred, I delivered a firm slap to the box, prompting an unexpected response."Fish detected. Capturing process begins in 3... 2... 1."A sudden burst of movement ensnared me in a tangled web of rope, reminiscent of the nets that often ensnared my people back on the island. With a resigned sigh, I ceased my struggles, feigning lifelessness in hopes of evading capture. As the net hoisted me towards the surface, I braced myself for the unknown fate that awaited. The vessel's occupants, their voices gruff and abrasive, debated my fate as they untangled the net."What the heck is this abomination?""I don't know, some kind of fish-human lady?""It's disgusting. Let's throw the dang thing back in the water."Relief flooded me as their disdainful remarks spared me from immediate harm. However, my involuntary chuckle betrayed my façade of lifelessness, eliciting a chilling response from my captors."Did that thing just laugh?""I think she did.""Ewww, let's kill her!"Fear clenched my heart at their menacing words, prompting me to redouble my efforts at feigning death. Just as despair threatened to overwhelm me, a commanding voice interrupted the confrontation."What's going on out here?" the newcomer barked."Nothing much, captain. Just putting this creature out of her misery.""Her?" the captain's skepticism was palpable."Yeah, she has long hair and looks pretty female to me."With a swift reprimand, the captain quelled his subordinates' bloodlust, leaving me bewildered by the sudden turn of events. As they nursed their bruised egos, the captain revealed a sinister truth that chilled me to the core."We are poachers of endangered animals and sell any odd creatures for tons of money, stuffed or alive. This abnormal fish could pass as a mermaid from legend, which many believe to be a myth... see where I am going with this?"Intrigued yet unnerved by the mention of a "mermaid," I awaited the captain's next move with trepidation, uncertain of the fate that awaited me in the hands of these ruthless opponents.
