12June 12
It's been a few days since everything happened. Since Rafe kissed me right in front of JJ. Neither Rafe nor I have met since that incident. After he gave me that look he never usually gives me. There was just something different in his gaze, but I still can't understand what.
I've spent most of my time in my room these past few days, except for working at the surf shop, though. My parents are very insistent that I need to work, but they also want me to spend more time with Rafe. That's why they've arranged some family dinner tonight, but Sarah and I have other plans. It's bonfire tonight, a party with both Kooks and Pogues. We usually go every year, and we're going this year too. So somehow we'll manage to sneak out during dinner. The downside, however, is that it's quite difficult to leave the family dinner when we all have to sit at the dinner table for several hours and sometimes they decide we should do some weird activities. Hopefully, we'll figure it out anyway. It always works out in the end.
"We're thinking of heading over to the Cameron's now," my mom comes walking in the hallway and stops in front of the couch where I'm sitting in the living room. She's dressed up. I'm not wearing fancy clothes because I'm going to the bonfire and don't want to ruin my best clothes on a dirty beach on the cut. So I opted for a light top with a matching skirt.
"Coming," I say, getting up from the couch and following my mom to the hallway where Nathan and my dad are waiting for us. Nathan doesn't look happy, and I guess he's talked to dad. Because both of them seem to have some chemistry between them that doesn't seem good. They just seem to be mad at each other.
As we walk over to the Cameron's, it's quiet. Nathan walks at the back, clearly not having much desire to join the dinner. My dad, on the other hand, walks ahead with my mom by his side, clearly excited about the dinner. I haven't seen Sarah since before I found out everything about Rafe, but I really feel like if there's anyone I need to talk to, it's her. She listens every time.
My dad rings the doorbell, and almost immediately the door is opened by Ward, who smiles brightly when he sees us.
"Come in" he says, holding the door open for us to enter the house. The smell of food immediately spreads through my nose as I step in.
"The food is ready over here, just come on in," I hear Rose call from the kitchen, and I follow my family over to the kitchen. In the kitchen, everyone in the Cameron family is already there, and I'm happy to see Sarah again, even though it's only been a few days.
"Hey!" she says and gives me a hug. "Hope you're okay, I mean, with everything that's happening," she whispers in my ear before letting go of the hug and giving me a smile.
"Hey, thanks," I say and smile back at Sarah. I'm really grateful to have someone like Sarah in my life. I don't know what I would do without her. Life would've been so hard then.
"Just take a seat," Rose says, laying out the last of the dishes on the table and pointing to the chairs to sit down. Wheezie sits down right away, as do my parents and Ward. Rose sits next to my mom, and I sit next to Sarah. Of course, Rafe is in front of me, and I try my best to avoid eye contact.
"I guess you've heard the news about Adeline and Rafe," Ward says after a while of silence. He looks out over the table as if he wants to see people's reactions. Nathan sits silently, staring down at his plate. Sarah looks sadly at me, and I'm glad she doesn't hate me at least.
"It's for the best of the rumor. You'll see it'll be fine," my dad says when no one else says anything. Maybe they'll start to realize that this is probably the dumbest idea they'll ever come up with.
