Maya listened intently as Alex delved into the complexities of his past relationship with Sarah. She kept an open mind as he told his side of the story. She could sense the weight of his experiences, the highs and lows.

"It wasn't all bad," Alex began, his voice tinged with nostalgia. "There were moments we were happy when I thought we could overcome anything together."

Maya nodded to encourage him to continue, her gaze soft as she met Alex's eyes. She could see the depth of his emotions, which were just beneath the surface.

"But there were also times when we hurt each other and didn't communicate or support each other the way we should have," Alex continued, his expression somber. "And eventually, the toxicity of the relationship became too much to bear."

Maya reached across the table, her hand finding Alex's from across the table. "I'm sorry. I didn't know," she said softly, her voice filled with compassion. "The two of you were good at hiding your issues from your friends."

Alex nodded, his hand tightening slightly around Maya's in silent gratitude for her understanding. "Yeah, she was always concerned about appearances, especially in front of our friends. But behind closed doors, things were nowhere near perfect."

Maya squeezed his hand reassuringly, offering him a supportive smile. "Relationships are hard, Alex."

"No kidding," Alex chuckled softly, his eyes meeting Maya's with a mixture of sadness and resignation. "I want to be with someone willing to fight with me...fight for me."

Maya nodded, agreeing that passion was one of the most essential things in a relationship. It's something she longed for too. "Yeah. I know what you mean."

He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the next part of his story. "Sarah didn't take it well when I finally decided to end things. She accused me of cheating. The truth is, She couldn't see any other reason why I would want to leave."

Maya listened in silence, conflicted about whose side she was on. The more she sympathized with Alex, the more she came close to breaking "girl code."

"And then, not long after the breakup, I received the offer to join the law office in LA," Alex continued a note of resignation in his voice. "It felt like a sign, an opportunity to start over, to leave behind what didn't make me happy."

Maya nodded in understanding, her sympathy for her best friend tempered by her growing admiration for Alex's resilience. "I can only imagine how difficult that must have been," she said softly, her voice filled with empathy.

Alex leaned back in his chair, a nostalgic smile playing on his lips as he reflected on their friendship. "You know, separate from everything with Sarah, I've always considered you a friend. May

Maya's heart warmed at Alex's words, but she sensed an undertone, a subtle shift in his demeanor that hinted at something more. She brushed it off, attributing it to the comfort of seeing a familiar face. "I think you're just a little homesick, Alex," she teased gently, offering him a reassuring smile.

Alex chuckled, but his eyes showed a glimmer of sincerity as he met Maya's gaze. "Maybe you're right," he admitted. "But It's nice to have a friend around, especially because it's you."

Maya knew that their friendship had its own significance, one that had grown and evolved over the years. While Sarah remained her best friend, Maya felt fortunate that Alex would show her around the city that was now her home.

After finishing their food, Maya glanced at her phone and let out a small gasp. "Wow, I didn't realize it was so late," She realized they spent almost half the day together.

Alex nodded, a flicker of disappointment crossing his features, but confirmed that she was right. "Yeah, Dang. I didn't realize so much time had passed."

Maya smiled, agreeing it felt like they had just met in the park for their hike. "Definitely. But I should probably get going. I have to be in the office at 7 am."

Reluctantly, Alex nodded. "Of course. Let me walk you to your car." He opened the door for her, a gentlemanly gesture that didn't go unnoticed by Maya.

As she settled into the driver's seat and prepared to pull away, Alex tapped gently on her window, prompting her to roll it down. Maya furrowed her brow, curious about what he wanted to say.

"Are you okay, Alex?" she asked, concern lacing her words.

Alex hesitated for a moment, his gaze searching hers. "Just...text me when you get home, okay? I want to make sure you're safe." He resisted setting up another time to see her, deciding against being too eager. He didn't want to scare her away.

Maya sensed that there was more he wanted to say. But before she could dwell on it, she nodded, a soft smile on her lips. "I will, Alex. Thank you."

With that, Maya navigated the dark streets of Los Angeles. She walked through her door shortly after 930 pm, immediately launching into her nightly routine and crawling into bed. She sent Alex a quick text, just as she had promised.

Maya tossed and turned as she begged for sleep. With a frustrated sigh, she reached for her phone, hoping to distract herself with social media.

As she scrolled through Sarah's post, Maya couldn't help but feel sympathy for her friend's stressful day. She hesitated for a moment before deciding to give Sarah a call, hoping to offer some comfort and support.

The phone rang a few times before it went to voicemail, and she was disappointed, but Chicago was two hours ahead, and it was close to midnight there. She debated leaving a message but ultimately decided against it, opting to send a text instead. She sent an encouraging message, offering hope that her week would improve.

With her message sent, Maya turned off her phone and settled back into her pillows, the weight of the day finally catching up to her. As she drifted to sleep, her thoughts returned to Alex, the conflicting feelings still tugging at her heart. She reasoned with herself, telling herself that it was just the novelty of being in a new place and reconnecting with an old friend. She said to herself that's all it could be.
