Chapter twenty-one.
Kian.
I watch silently as Francis steps out of the passenger seat of my car. He wanted to see Carmen enjoy her birthday surprise, so I brought him to the city in my car. We only stayed for like ten minutes, he watched Carmen from the shadows, her not once seeing him, before he asked me to drive him a few minutes away from the arena.
Pulling the trunk open, he takes his huge sports bag from there as I close the driver's side of the door.
His motorcycle is parked somewhere nearby, he said.
"So, how long is this 'business' going to take?" I ask, shoving my hands into the pockets of my jeans. And why are we being fucking secretive with this shit?
Francis takes in a deep breath as if preparing his answer. "I don't know yet. Not too long, I hope."
Two days ago he told me it would take him approximately a week.
It's already late into the night and the streets are lit up by buildings and glowing lights and street lamps.
I sigh, "Okay."
He nods, lowering his head as he raises his hand goodbye and turns around.
"Drive safe," I say as Perez takes the first step. "Some roads are still a bit slippery and wet."
Pausing for a moment, he looks at me over his shoulder before fully turning around. I watch as he stalks towards me and then his arms are around me in a tight hug.
"Bye, Kie."
And with that, he is gone.
I got that sinking feeling in my stomach.
Heart straight to my toes like the tower drop in an amusement park.
Well, this isn't amusing.
At least he was there for his best friend's birthday.
Even if she didn't see him that night.
Such a dramatic exit.
Oh, Fran.
