He had it all. He was tall and handsome, smart, popular and athletic. Matthew Way was the king of Rockwell High. Senior year rolled around and it was time for prom, he drove to school that morning with his friend Chase Scott when they noticed a new girl sitting on the curb.
Matthew didn't think much of the girl, she had on a large sweater and a hat- he could hardly see her. He walked up to his usual crowd of fellow populars, they were talking about prom, of course and he pointed her out;
"Hey, anyone talk to the new girl yet?" He asked.
"No." Lacey Brice chirped, she was the head cheerleader, popular and beautiful, and of course- Matthews girlfriend. "But, we should welcome her to Rockwell the way we welcome everyone." She grinned devilishly, "Matthew, Chase, let's go."
The trio strutted up to the girl, forming a semi circle in front of her.
"You're new aren't you?" Chase asked.
The new girl did not look up, she was drawing something in her book, and nodding her head. She was listening to music with her headphones in.
"Excuuuuse meeee.." Lacey said, each syllable drawn out, staring the girl down. She did not look up.
Lacey Brice ripped her headphones out. "I said, welcome to Rockwell, I'm Lacey, this is Chase and this is Matthew. We're the popular crowd of the school," She said, pointing to the group of people staring at them, "And you can either be one of us, or a weird freak loner, but if you're going to be one of us, you have to change your look." She sneered, trying to be nice was hard for Lacey.
"I'll pass," The new girl said flatly, "Please give my headphones back too." She said, not wanting anything to do with them.
"What?!" Lacey cried "Whatever, be a freak. See if I care."
At that, the new girl lifted her head to stare directly at them. Matthew was struck with how beautiful she was, they all were. Her face reminded you of stories and road trips and lakes and amazing memories, it was a face you'd never forget. "I'm not a freak, and I'm good, now leave me alone." She said with force. And at that, they did. She turned as if she were walking away, but grabbed the girls bag and running with it. The new girl called after them, but they were too fast.

The whole day Matthew could not forget the new girl, they were in honours math together, and she shared a table with her. It seemed like she wasn't paying attention, but she must've, because she was brilliant. The teachers tested her in front of everyone, and everyone was baffled, she was so smart. But that wasn't what made Matthew pay attention. Her notebook was filled with beautiful drawing and quotes and lyrics. It was beautiful. He must've stared at her the whole class, but she never glanced at him, which made him sad, but he didn't know why.
At the end of the day he decided he had to talk to her, he even walked right past Lacey, Madison and Rose, easily the most attractive girls in Rockwell, except for maybe the new girl.
"What the fuck Matthew?!" Lacey yelled back at him. "Are you not coming to my house?"
He sweeper past her, what if the new girl had left before he got to her. She was just about to leave the school, and get into her car but he stopped her. "Hey," He said, blushing because he was out of breath "Sorry about my friends, they don't like new people, but I'm not like them, I don't hate you. Whatever, I just wanted to ask what your name was, and welcome you to Rockwell. Oh, and here's your bag, sorry about that" He smiled at her, and she smiled back.
"Thank you." She grinned, "And my name is Wyona, Wyona Abner."
