✵
Aemond always felt like a dormant monster ever since Driftmark. And even if he wouldn't, people around him made sure to remind him at every turn. He was not the first man to have lost an eye, numerous soldiers did, but he was the first royal child to lose one, to a petty fight between children. That empty socket that was left after these events made him look like a monster for a lot of people, so he covered it, in an effort to fit in, he still cared at that time. But he himself knew there was more to his monstrosity than his looks.
The way his heart was ice-cold, how he reveled in fighting and dominating others. How the fear he inspired others on the back of his unreasonably large dragon. The way he enjoyed to punish others that did him wrong at one point, or even the way he acted when anyone was looking or talking about his wife in a way that displeased him. He could never feel more alive than when fighting or asserting dominance over others.
But waking up as the morning sun leaked through the open balcony, warming his bare skin, opening his eye to find Daenyra still curled up against him, bare in his arms. That, was something else entirely. A peaceful feeling took over his entire body, enveloping him in a soft serenity veil. His mind usually fuming with countless revenge thoughts became quiet, and all that mattered was the woman in his arms.
They had been married for a few moons now, and he couldn't tire of their marital lives. As usual he ran his finger into her mane of silver white hair, looking at her as she was sleeping peacefully, without a care in the world. Eventually she started to stir awake, making Aemond smile softly as she groaned sleepily and rubbed her eyes. And then she looked at him, and she smiled. Her blinding, loving smile, that was only for him. "Good morrow, wife. I do hope you slept well." Aemond said, running his slim fingers across her cheek as she giggled lightly before deposing a kiss on his shoulder. "That, I did. I got my hands on a pretty comfy and warm pillow, if you want to know." And with that she snuggled further into him, rubbing her nose on the crook of his neck. "Be careful my love, you are starting to spend more time in bed in the mornings, I reckon Criston would have to wait for you more and more each day" she jested, as Aemond let out a scoff. "What can I say, I have a wife now, I have a duty to see her first in the morning, before anyone else" Daenyra playfully rolled her eyes while lightly slapping his torso. "My Lord husband is such a treasure, taking his duties to me to heart and with the utmost seriousness" They both laughed before Aemond tightened his hold on her, kissing her forehead, then her nose before kissing her lips.
If the first days were a bit complicated for him, Daenyra managed to make sure he understood that he could get comfortable with her. And so, after a while, Aemond entirely stopped wearing his eyepatch when they were only together. Of course she had seen him without it before, Seven Hells, she even saw his wound when it was gory and fresh.
But she saw him bare only years ago, then he had started wearing the eyepatch, mostly removing it only at night, after sending off all the servants. Now she was seeing him everyday, boosting his confidence first thing in the morning and last thing before they went to sleep.
