I know nobody comes to Wattpad for life lessons but I still felt the need to say this.
Some comments were hoping that Eric would be a father figure or a mentor sort of friend for Athena. But he wasn't that from the very beginning. I really thought everyone would figure out he’s not a good guy.
Since a lot (if not most) readers of my books are teenagers, I wanted to put out a list of red flags of Eric which were clear identifiers of a predator. I hope you caught some yourself.
1. A good man would never talk about indecent topics (like his wife's inability to give him a head) with a minor. And if you didn't notice, he brought up the subject himself. It's common for predators to subtly slide in such a topic to peak the minor’s interest (as they are really curious at this age) once a regular flow of conversation is established.
2. Predators are smart. They either behave like a friend or act uninterested once they know the teenager is attracted to them. Eric went with the latter and opted to ignore Athena's attempts to get close to him but never told her to back off in a straightforward manner. This made her want to pursue him more and take this like a challenge.
3. Furthermore, when Eric mentioned his wife and their highschool love story, that was only a way to gain trust. Because in the very next minute he revealed that he is separated from his wife so Athena won't be discouraged and back off. He also mentioned how he was cheated on, which was to gain her sympathy.
4. He then goes on to mention how he shouldn't be talking to her because he’ll be in trouble with his boss. This conveys that he doesn't have an intention to talk to her ever again but if she wants to do so then she should hide it from everyone. Which is the exact solution she then suggests thinking it was her own idea when she was actually manipulated into it.
5. Giving her a nickname, telling her about his kids, teaching her how to make a french braid and how to whistle were all ways to get close to her. And at the same time, he’s teaching her how to pick up men.
6. Even when Athena called him sexy, he didn't react. He didn't tell her not to say that, instead he kept quiet which led her to continue such behavior.
7. He should’ve refused to put sunscreen on her back. Instead he agreed and went into the room with her.
8. When he asked if she wanted the door to be open or closed and told her he was done putting the sunscreen on her back, it was all his way of letting her feel like she was in control and she's making him stay. Which is exactly what she likes; to feel she's taking her own decisions.
9. While in bed with her, he kept complimenting her so she'll be even more willing than she already was for sexual intimacy.
10. Lastly, the first chance he got to have sex with her, he took it. Because that is what he has been waiting for. He wanted her to initiate and she did.
For anyone who's going to come and say, “It was Athena's fault. She initiated.” Or “It's equally her fault.” Then listen up, Kids are dumb. A lot of them are.
They don't know the difference between right and wrong. They're still in the process of figuring it out. It is important for kids to keep themselves safe but they still might mess up for something that's worth taking a risk (in their eyes).
They might want attention, money, care, control or simply the thrill of being with someone older. Or they might want to explore sexual intimacy as they're curious and encouraged by teenage hormones. Or they could be impressed with the personality or fall for the looks of the adult. Most people have crushes on adults in their teenage years, it's really common.
But it's the adult's responsibility to know better and stay away from minors.
Many adults (despite having attraction towards minors) won't approach kids because of fear —of police, their family, society or anything else. And when the minor initiates there's a huge chance they would take the risk. But that still doesn't justify it because a MINOR CAN'T CONSENT. So ultimately it's the adult who's at fault if they pursue a relationship.
And I wanted to put this out there for my younger readers that pedos don't come with a default behavior —as you saw with Eric. Not every predator (man or woman) will have the same creepy vibe and be direct with their intentions.
Stay cautious.
