It did not take long for the two of us to reach the gates surrounding the hospital. The rain calmed to a light drizzle, but the gloomy atmosphere was still very prevalent.
"Where's the nearest back entrance?" Ellie crouched down behind a tree and stared at the hospital.
You followed her movement, crouching down next to her. You point to the west side of the hospital. "There. It is guarded by a girl, I forget her name. She is usually glued to her video game anyways." You felt conflicted about helping this strange girl. On one hand, Abby Anderson is the reason everything went wrong. She ratted you out. She could die and you wouldn't care less. On the other hand, Ellie could have done much worse. You don't know this girl.
Two Weeks Earlier
On this particular day the moon shone bright. The stars seemed to gleam lighter and the air was a little sweeter. You plopped your backpack down beside you and sat down on the ground of a grassy area. Moss stained trees and dense bushes surrounded you. You looked up smiling, waiting for her.
It was not long when you saw Sky walking towards you with a kind smile on her face. She was wearing a heavy dark coat which covered a plain white shirt. Her beautiful long hair was tucked neatly into a bun. The brown backpack shifted side to side as she walked towards you. You stared at the scars on her cheeks. The scar started from the corner of her lip and dragged all the way to the beginning of her ear. Somehow, it did not take away from her beauty.
We were not supposed to be meeting. If anyone found out we would both surely die. Scars and Wolves were at war, killing each other mercilessly. Of course you just had to fall in love with one.
You were supposed to be enemies, you were supposed to hate her. Yet her laugh is the sweetest sound on earth, her smile lights up the room, and her gentle demeanor made you feel safe.
"Hi beautiful." She chirped as she sat down next to you. Her eyes were filled with love and tenderness.
"Hey. Its nice to see you Sky." You couldn't help but smile as you looked into her eyes. You leaned in and pressed your lips against hers, touching her cheek before pulling away.
"How are things at the village?" You asked after pulling away.
Sky's smile dropped. "Not too good."
You frowned. "Still? What's going on?"
Sky started, "They are scared, Tara. Families are preparing for war. Food is being rationed and soldiers are being trained until they can't anymore." She sighed sadly.
"Are they pushing you too hard in training?" you asked.
Sky nodded sadly. "It is excruciating. They push us so hard Tara. I don't want anything to do with this."
"I'm sorry, Sky. I really am. It will be over soon."
This must be so hard on her. My heart aches for the pain she is going through.
"I hope so." She replied in a whisper.
I put my hand in hers and squeezed softly. That was when I noticed a bruise on her hand.
"Hey how did you get this? Was it during training?" I asked out of pure curiosity, stroking the bruise with my thumb.
Sky's eyes narrowed. "I tried to tell my mother."
"What do you mean?" You questioned your eyebrows furrowing.
Sky took a deep breath before speaking. "As a scar... I am supposed to marry a man. I am to have children and raise them. That is what the prophet wants. We all have a role to play, and that is mine." She looked at the ground, playing with the grass underneath us. "I told my mom that I was...different. That I did not want to do that."
