SOME WOULD SAY BOARDING school is amazing, because they get dormitories which are like their home away from home. But with dormitories come roommates. And they could tend to argue - a lot.
But not Mia and Quinn - they had a good dynamic, due to how much they had in common. And not just that they were both bespectacled brunettes.
Every day, Quinn would have an idea for a brand new invention because she loved science. Whether it was a silent leaf blower, a sleep monitor or a pair of binoculars with five lenses, of all things, she had a gift for experimenting - Mia found it interesting, which was one of the main reasons why Quinn valued her as a roommate and a best friend.
In return, Quinn was always open-minded about the things Mia enjoyed getting up to in their dormitory - although all her hobbies certainly weren't as immersive as scientific curiosity.
One sunny morning at Pacific Coast Academy, Mia was finishing up her diary entry with her small blue CD player filling the dormitory with the unforgettable song, Ginger Fox's Hate Me, Love Me.
Mia then shut her diary, placed it on her desk, got up from her bed and stretched her arms.
"Morning, Mia!" Quinn brightly greeted, as she skipped rope - a routine that Mia found curious.
She had once read somewhere that skipping in the morning stimulated the brain and Quinn agreed.
"Good morning." Mia replied, glancing at her desk in confusion. "Er, have you seen my brush?"
"Uh-huh! Yesterday at four-thirty." Quinn said, still skipping. "Remember? You let Nicole borrow it."
"Ahh," said Mia, nodding, "right. Be right back."
It was early, only quarter to eight, and Mia moved quietly down the hall towards Room 101.
Nicole and Penny would be up by now, but Dana was likely still asleep. Or so Mia thought, until she heard Dana’s raised voice and Nicole’s high-pitched responses from down the hall.
"Oh, gosh(!)" Mia sighed under her breath.
This wasn’t the first time she had overheard their bickering and she was sure it wouldn’t be the last.
She decided to look for Penny instead and headed towards the girls’ bathroom. Sure enough, Penny was in there, brushing her teeth.
"Good morning, Penny." Mia greeted, giving her friend a smile. Penny hummed and waved, facing the mirror with her toothbrush in her mouth.
Then Mia took a breath, bracing herself for the inevitable. "Er, Dana and Nicole are.. at it again."
Penny groaned. "Not again." She mumbled through the mint toothpaste, before spitting it out.
Together, they walked back to the dorm.
Penny knocked repeatedly on the door, realising a bit too late that she had forgotten her key.
"Ugh. Nicole, Dana, open up!" She called, sounding quite exasperated. The door opened, revealing Dana looking more irritated than sleepy.
Mia gave her a polite nod as she and Penny walked in. "Hi, Dana." She greeted, awkwardly.
"Where's your key?" Dana asked Penny, turning to her. "I forgot it." She admitted, shrugging.
"Again." Dana remarked bluntly.
"Where's Nicole?" Mia asked.
Just then, as if on cue, the lavender closet doors slowly cracked open and Nicole’s head peeked out.
