Chapter 2- Thalia

Thalia raised her hunting knife to ward off the creatures, knowing it would be futile. 'And what does it matter?' a voice in her head said 'You have no family, no friends,  if you die who's left to care that your dead?'

"Leave. Me. Alone" Thalia growled at the voice and lunged at the monsters her dagger held aloft. Any hope she had of reaching the tunnel, of surviving the fight evaporated leaving only the thought of how much she  hated these monsters, these things that never left her alone, that followed her like the plague "If I'm going down I'm gonna make you HURT" she snarled.

As her knife imbedded itself deep into one of them an arrow swept over her head, so close it ruffled her hair. She swung around, sure the arrow was meant for her and saw, at the mouth of the tunnel, two.. guards? wearing heavy, bulky armour and weighed down by equipment. The taller of the two nocked another arrow as the other gestured for Thalia to follow them into the tunnel.

Thalia hesitated for a second and that instant was all it took for one of the creatures to fly at her, she twisted and slashed at it with her remaining dagger but her grip on the handle was too loose and  slipped out of her hand. "Come ON!" the smaller guard screamed, a girl if Thalia had to guess, her voice slightly high pitched.

Thalia whirled around and sprinted towards the two figures. The larger guard fired arrows behind her each arrow hit a monster but they reformed almost as fast as he could kill them. As she drew near the girl pulled a long golden sword from its sheath, it seemed overly long but the girl flicked her wrist and the sword killed at least five monsters and Thalia made the decision not to complain.

She slowed to a halt beside them ,her muscles screaming from the sprint and looked at them. Their armour looked old-fashioned and glowed with a soft golden sheen. They each had javelins strapped to their back, she was right in thinking that the  one with the sword was a girl. She had had luminous gold eyes and curly brown hair that escaped from her helmet. "Retreat to camp," she ordered the other guard, a Chinese looking boy who looked a few years older then her, and at least twice her size. "There's too many venti and they're coming back as fast as we can kill them. Go! Take her and I'll cover you."

"Venti?" Thalia wheezed, clutching a stitch in her side "That's what they're called?"

The boy grabbed her arm and pulled her through the tunnel "We'll explain everything when we get to camp." He promised "Now hurry up!"

They ran through the tunnel, their footsteps echoing on stone. Behind them Thalia heard the girl yell.

"We have to go back!" Thalia tried to turn around ,"We have to help her!"

"She can take care of herself," the boy assured her, pulling her along, until, defeated, she ran on her own.

The tunnel widened and she saw a huge valley, separated from them by a gleaming river. Thalia skidded to a stop. "Come on." the guy yanked on her arm but released her immediately with a yell. An electric current had surged through her making her impossible to hold. " What was that?" He yelped before gasping and kneeling "Lady Diana!"

In front of Thalia a dark haired girl, maybe twelve, had appeared. "Who are you?" She demanded . The girls hair changed to auburn and her toga was replaced by a silver hoodie and silver combat trousers, much like Thalia herself was wearing "Juno plays a dangerous game, an unpredictable  wager." The girl said sadly, "An exchange."

"What do you mean?" Thalia asked warily.

"I wouldn't expect you to remember." She told her, "You can regain your memories. The key lies deep in camp, but it will be difficult."

Like everything in the last few weeks has been a walk in the park.Thalia wanted to scream. Instead she settled for "But the water... I can't..."  Why she was so scared of the water  she didn't know, nevertheless she got an answer "Neptune is too... confused to try anything. Although, crossing the river, you will lose my blessing and you may not be able to regain it."

Thalia didn't know why this kids blessing was so important but she nodded like she did. "Yes my lady."

"Good luck Thalia. You have been a good lieutenant  and served the hunt well." The  girls eyes sparkled with tears. Thalia looked away., feeling embarrassed. When she looked back the girl was gone. The Chinese boy gaped at her, at loss for words as the other guard came running towards them. Her helmet was gone and her curly brown hair blew in her face.

"Get across the river!"  The girl screamed. "They won't stay buried for long!"

The other guard looked wary but pulled Thalia to the waters edge. "You'll be safe once you get through it," he said. She stared at the dark water. She'd drown. She knew she would. But at the same time she might not. She might get across and get her memories back. It will be difficult. The girl had said. Thalia fervently hoped this was what she meant. She doubted it though. The water rippled as her boot broke the surface. It came almost to the top. She groaned silently. She hated wet feet.

"It's okay," the girl had caught up with them. "I know how you feel. I hate water too." She waded out to the middle of the river where the water came up to her ribs. "See? This as deep as it gets. It's alright."

A step. Lift a foot and put it down. Then her feet could take care of the rest. One foot forward. One step. The venti had reformed and were coming towards them. She took the step. The girl whooped and cheered as she splashed to wards them.

Thalia reached the shore on the other side and sagged, the water had seemed to boost her strength but now she felt like she had been run over by a truck. "I'll go tell Reyna" the boy said and ran off. Thalia stood and watched the storms spiral into the sky.

"Why are they leaving?"

The girl smiled slightly "there's too many of us. Eventually we'd kill them-  for good."

 "Us?" She asked her.

"Demigods." She said "I'm Hazel Levesque by the way. And that was Frank. Frank Zhang. You are?"

"Thalia." She said shortly.

Hazel laughed "No last name then?

"No." Thalia replied immediately. "None."

They watched the  river churn in silence before Frank returned "She's on her way." He reported. "Before she gets here," he said, looking at Thalia, "We need to talk."

"What? Why? " Hazel demanded.

"Before you caught up I tried to pull her across the river. Something made me let go. An electric shock." Frank told her.

"Jason?" Hazel gasped.

Frank took a shaky breath "That's what  I thought. Himbeing Jupiter's kid and all. It could have been Diane I guess but-"

"Diane?"

"She appeared. Talked to.." "Thalia" Hazel supplied " Talked to Thalia like a friend. Something about a blessing. Diane said she'd lose it if she crossed the river. She looked different though, she had orange hair and wore silver clothes like Thalia."

Thalia sensed her cue to begin speaking, "I don't know who she was. I don't know what her blessing is or why it's such a big deal. The thing is.. I don't know anything. Well, I do know stuff like how to tie my laces and how to fight. But I don't know who taught me or where."

"Nothing?" Frank said in a hushed tone.

"Nothing. It's like my brains been wiped clean. All I remember is since waking up at an abandoned house in California."

"There's Reyna." Hazel said. A lone figure in purple was striding towards them. "She's our Praetor. Watch out for her dogs, Aurum and Argentun, the Latin will come easily enough. They know when your lying so tell the truth."

"Thanks" Thalia muttered out of the corner of her mouth.

"You're the new demigod." Reyna said. It wasn't a question. "Welcome to Camp Jupiter."
