It was a warm and sunny morning for the people of Qaye Village. As men were busy hearding their cows and sheeps some went to hunt for meat for tonight's dinner. On the other side, woman were busy decorating their houses with cow dung while other's were busy making sour African beer for their husbands who went out for hunting and work.
I was in the kitchen making steamed bread for break fast and on the table Azania was busy filling 5 cups with sugar, milk powder and tea bags waiting for water to boil. Then a heavy breath escaped her lips.
"Sister Amanda, What is love? Like how does it feel like?", Azania asked me with a smile on her face.
I stopped whatever I was doing then looked deep into Azania's eyes with curiosity.
"What made you ask this Azania?",I said.
"Nothing serious, it's just part of my curiosity. You know very well that mom and dad would kill me if I date but I'm a human with a heart Sister, I too want to experience and know how it feels,"Says Azania, with a smile on her face.
Then a chuckle escaped my lips.
"What is love?Love is patience. For me is the ability to trust, to treasure and protect the person you love at all cost. It's the ability to wait for several years, months and seasons just to see that person again. To hug him, kiss him and tell him how much you've missed his touch and voice," I stop talking then looked outside the window then my eyes became teary .I try so hard not to burst into tears but already Azania could trace pain in my voice."
"But are you still willing to wait for him Sister Amanda?", Says Azania with eyes filled with nothing but worry for me.
"I'm willing to wait for him Azania, he is my love. I promised to wait for him and he also promised to come back to me!",I said trying very hard to convince myself. Then I remembered, that I have a 2 years only daughter and her father never called, texted me back nor sent me a letter to atleast let me know what was going on.
"He is the son of the most powerful family in Korea, so for sure he must be busy doing something for his business and he'll come back in a few months or so."
This is what the timid and stupid me thought.
Then my mom walked inside the kitchen, with a shawl wrapped around her waist. She stood Still then looked at Amanda and Azani pretending like they were busy with their house chores all along.
"I'm not a kid to be fooled at you two. I carried you both in my womb for 9 months, I know you better than anybody in this earth. What were you two talking about that made you guys stop the moment I walked into this kitchen?,"Says Mrs Mensah, my mom in a firm tone.
"Nothing Ma!Is it a crime for two sisters to gossip?",Azania responds her,yet her tone didn't sound convincing to Mom.
"I'm going to let this one pass. How long will it take for you two to finish preparing breakfast?",She asked while busy opening the pot to check if the steamed bread is ready to dish.
"Give us 5 minutes Ma!",I said.
Taking out new plates for the visitors after I was instructed by mom to do so. I then took the steamed bread out of the pot then neatly sliced it into square shapes. On the other side Azania, poured hot water into a glay tea kettle, placing both the cups and the kettle on the tray.
"Look mom, we're done!",Says Azania.
"Good! Now follow me to the sitting room, our visitors have been waiting for quite a while now, especially for you my dear Amanda,"She says.
"Me? B-but why mom?",I asked her in a low tone filled with curiosity.
"I'll tell you when we reach there!",Mom responds.
