The Road to the Monastery
I hear the soft crunching of leaves as we walk to the center of Fodlan. Byleth and the lords are in front of me. We have spent most of the day walking so far. It seems the lords are more interested in Byleth than me, which is good. My plans were to try and get a good plan to kill the main heads of Those who slither in the dark. I could have followed the ones not tied to any nation to their main base. I wonder how far they are in the nemesis body right now. I should either destroy that dark creator sword or maybe see if the Antithesis. ‘What’s the Antithesis?’ Well, you see-.
Who the fuck is in my head! ‘Oh I’m sorry should I have waited till you slept to greet you?’ Wait that voice seems familiar? Another voice I know well appears. It’s the voice of Godess Byleth ‘It seems I was a bit too early to connect you two but it’s better to do this now.’ Okay, what is happening? ‘So because of some of your power later on being tied to the Antithesis, I realized until you reach the final step it needs someone to be a mediator for it. It was filled by the god who made it in its original word but since they don’t exist here it needs a new watcher for it to work as it needs to. I decided to recruit Arval for this. With my powers, I was able to free him from this world’s Shez since he would never be awakened in this timeline. After explaining his origin he became a willing helper on this quest.’ So Arval is my sothis but instead of the whole get a power-up like Shez or stopping time he manifests what the Antithesis does like eat weapons or my ability to move in the shadows which I should get later down the line. Did I get that all right? ‘Yes, but I also thought it would help to have someone be there for you in this hard journey I forced you into.’ Arval’s voice cuts in and says ‘I only have one question. What is the Antithesis?’
Oh right to explain the Antithesis is a weapon that looks like a simple handle that has a black cude near it. Said cube can hide in the user's shadow and one of the abilities it has to start with is if you feed it a weapon it can copy the weapon with any abilities said weapon has. It gets more later on but that’s it main one and any weapon I copy has lower durability than it originally had. ‘Ok. Cool. Well, I hope this is the start of a beautiful friendship.’ Same to you. Is that all? ‘Oh if you are talking about Byleth I think she left a bit ago.’ Ah so even as a goddess she leaves without saying a word. Well, that is good that she is still the same Byleth that I have been hanging out with these last few months. ‘Oh, you have already started a friendship with Byleth. From the little bit I have talked with her, she is not the most upfront person when it comes to social situations.’ She seems like that but if you can read people you can tell she holds a lot of emotions in her eyes. With Van’s ability of Insight, I can read her well, and with mine, I meant Van’s want to get better at combat I was able to bond with her easily. She also enjoys seeing my sword dancing when she gets up early.
‘Huh. Well, what’s the plan now that we are heading to the Monastery?’ I can try and get a job at the monastery but I need to be in a place to try to make the three houses closer than they would be. Maybe if Edlegard talks with Dimitri things could change. But to do this the houses need more opportunities to be closer. Maybe I can try to give the idea of a class with all three houses. ‘Maybe I can help with that?’ In what way? ‘Well from some of your memories on Rhea if you are shown to be interesting she may want to keep an eye on you. I can try to give off a little bit of that shadow affinity you have to her senses. Now it is a gamble but she could want to keep you in the Academy.’ Well, I don’t have many options. I will say if Jeralt stays at the Monastery then I will as well. He is my boss and one of the best things to happen in this life. He has treated me well and not many treat people right in Drow society. Crap my mind slipped to be a lot more in line with Van. ‘It seems this has been a problem before.’
Yeah. I keep a lid on it but when me and him line up it takes a bit to realize I’m not saying Van but me or I. Then again I am Van or Iron now. My old life is far away right now. ‘Still don’t get too lost in it. If you need help just ask. Oh right, what should I call you?’ Well, the name is Vanir Daggor but just call me Van, Arval. Also thanks. I look to see that Byleth has slowed down a bit and she is walking beside me now. “How are you fairing?” Byleth turns to me and I see that soft curious look take her eyes. As someone with the mindset of being afraid of most women because of the drow, she was a breath of fresh air. Since it’s been months with Byleth I can reason as Van that I am no longer uneasy by most women unless they remind me of the drow. She says in her soft voice “I don’t know. I have learned my father was once involved with these knights tied to a religion that I know little about. I know he had a life but it’s odd to learn about it from someone else. It is good that you joined us. I at least know a lot of people don’t like foreigners. I would hate to see people not realize that you are competent just because you're not from here.” A smile takes my face that is hidden by the helmet. I say to her “Hey you don’t need to worry about me. Also, it seems you are the bell of the ball. Oh wait I mean that those lords have taken a liking to you.” Byleth nods and says “Yes. They each have told me about the Academy and asked what life is like as a mercenary. They also asked about you as well.”
