Chapter Eleven: Close Call [Part 2]
I dropped the glass of water I was holding. The glass shattered and there was glass and water everywhere. It snapped me out of my trance. I jumped out of the way and grabbed for a towel and broom. I half mindedly cleaned up the mess and went back to the fridge to look at the picture.
It was definitely Callie. She had a long braid in the picture like she always does and her outfit was pink and frilly. I had been noticing Callie was wearing darker clothes and never with shoes on.
“Reagan?” My name was called from behind me. I let out a short scream and then swerved around to see Kim standing behind me in a dirty pair of overalls and a messy bun on the top of her head. Her face was smeared with dirt and she smelled of the fertilizer she uses out in the yard.
“Oh.” I gasp, clutching at my chest. She had given me quite the scare. I had successfully swallowed my downright hate of her down and tried to mask a normal person’s behavior. I didn’t want her to get suspicious.
“What happened? I heard a crashing. Is everything alright?” She asked, wiping her hands on a rag, which was the same rag I used to dry up the water.
“I accidently dropped a glass of water and it broke. Sorry, it was really an accident.” I said, shuffling my feet. Kim was being ultra-nice to me lately so what she did to me next, surprised me. She held up my face by my chin and lifted it to her eye sight.
“What dish was it?” She had asked; her voice low and hideous like. I gulped down a lump in my throat.
“It was the one with the cursive L on it.” I said like a small peep. That’s when she slapped me. She slapped me so hard, I fell!
“I said I was sorry!” I screamed, scrambling to get up.
“That glass was special to me!” She cried, crouching on the ground and raked her scalp.
“I didn’t mean to break it!” I yelled, feeling the heat of her slap radiate from my cheek. My jaw hurt really bad, I think she may have loosened one of my teeth!
“You don’t understand! That glass belonged to your mother!” She screamed. I stumbled back in surprise. All of a sudden my jaw wasn’t hurting that bad. My eyes started to water by themselves and I couldn’t stop them.
I couldn’t think of anything more brilliant thing to do so I ran to Callie’s secret hideout. The boathouse.
I pounded my fists on the door, but when she didn’t answer I peeked underneath the mat and took out the key and shoved it into the door keyhole. It unlocked and I bustled myself in. I searched for the light switch and then flicked it on. The light flashed inside the room. It was burned out. I let out a growl. I shuffled myself to the bed and sat down, but when I did, something pinched my behind! I jumped up and felt for whatever pinched me and found something cold and sleek. I picked it up and felt a chain the connected to it. It was a necklace. I went outside of the room and looked at the necklace in the light. It was that locket Callie had taken from Kim’s room. That was three and a half weeks ago. How things change in such little time.
I opened up the locket and found inside was a picture of my parents; a picture of my father on the left and a picture of my mother on the right.
“They loved me, you know. Treated me like a human.” Callie’s voice came from behind my ear. I whipped around and found her not to be there.
“They loved you more of course. Why wouldn’t they? I mean they are your parents.” I looked in front of me and found Callie there, standing. She looked angry and was shaking slightly.
“Callie, are you okay?” I asked, taking her hand, but she tore it away from me.
“No. You always got everything, while I was stuck with her!” Callie screamed, pushing me. I tumbled back and landed on my back. I let out a groan.
“Callie—“ Before I could say anything more, Callie ripped the locket from my hands.
“If I couldn’t have them, no one else could. Not you, not Kim, not anyone!” She said, and then dived into the water in her clothes. I crawled to the edge and noticed she never resurfaced.
I sat back, dazed, and felt an uneasiness grow over me. What did she mean by that no one could have my parents?
I felt trapped. I didn’t know who to trust anymore. Callie or Kim? I puzzled over the question then ran back to the house and sank into my bed and cried until I fell asleep. That is until I woke up from a crashing that was heard from inside the kitchen.
Being the little curious thing I am, I snapped up and practically ran to the kitchen, but then stopped myself. I hid inside the shadows and listened.
There was more crashing and then a slurping sound. I peeked from behind the wall and saw Kim leaned against the counter. She was drinking a caramel colored drink in a glass cup with a cursive letter P on the side. I’ve known from experience that the drink was Whiskey.
There was glass everywhere and blood splattered randomly on the floor. I held back a gasp and watched as Kim set down her drink and stepped forward and took a glass off of the counter and threw it onto the floor where it shattered. I jumped back in surprise and sank to the floor. I watched as she did this to the rest of the glasses and passed out on the floor. I walked over to her and noticed blood pooling around her. I sunk down to her and noticed on her wrists were identical scars as mine and some new bloody ones. I shrieked and scooted away from her. Kim was cutting herself?
That’s when I looked up to the glass cup on the counter and saw the letter P on the side. The matching one was the one I broke. I then wondered why she would have two cups with the letters P and L on them.
That’s when it clicked in my head it was the first letter in my parent’s names.
Laurie and Paul.
