⚠️TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ this story contains alcoholism, relapsing, drinking, and foul language——————
Kuroo wasn't blind when I came to Kenma's bad days. Thank God they didn't occur very often anymore but he could tell when he was struggling to hold himself back. It was especially hard for him knowing that kenma had very easy access to what fed his addiction. But Kuroo knows how to keep Kenma distracted from it.
distracting was plan A. He'd sit down with him and suggest a video game or to go on walk to the mall, maybe even have him come to his house just to sleep.
If distracting didn't work, Kuroo would resort to plan B: making Shirley temples. He'd tell kenma to think of it as a mix, and most of the time it would work. Kuroo knows that this option wasn't the best idea but he hopes that it would get him hooked on Shirley temples. It's always good to be addicted to something that cant kill you.
Plan C: something Kuroo hopes he'd never have to resort to. Telling his parents. Kuroo hoped it would never come to Plan C. He knew what it could mean for Kenma—losing the little freedom he had, being dragged to appointments, facing his parents' anger or fear. But if it came to it, Kuroo had to be prepared. Sometimes, the people you love need more help than you can give, even if it feels like a betrayal. One night, after a long day, Kuroo got a text from Kenma: hey... do you wanna come over?
There was something off about it—Kenma usually wasn't one to ask for company outright. Kuroo didn't hesitate. By now, he was good at reading between Kenma's lines, picking up the signals Kenma didn't even realize he was sending.
When Kuroo arrived, Kenma was sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the wall. His fingers were tapping against his knee, his face was expressionless, but Kuroo knew that blankness hid an inner struggle. Kenma was the type to lock up, to stay silent and still when he was wrestling with something bigger than himself.
Kuroo didn't waste a second. "Hey, let's get some fresh air. I'm sick of being inside." He tried to sound casual, grabbing Kenma's arm to pull him up. Kenma looked at him, hesitant, but Kuroo held his gaze with a determined smile.
They ended up on a late-night walk around the block, neither of them saying much. Kuroo would point out the occasional stray cat or mention some random fact to break the silence. He didn't press Kenma to talk; he knew better than to dig when Kenma wasn't ready.
As they walked, Kenma's shoulders relaxed slightly, and his usual stiffness faded. They wandered for a while until they reached a small playground that was quiet and empty. Kuroo grinned and jumped onto one of the swings, the chains creaking under his weight.
"Bet you can't swing higher than me," he challenged, giving Kenma a teasing look.
Kenma rolled his eyes but took the bait, sitting down on the swing next to him. They started swinging in sync, feet kicking against the gravel as they tried to outdo each other. After a while, Kenma let out a laugh—a real one, quiet but genuine.
"Alright, fine, you win," Kenma muttered, slowing his swing.
Kuroo laughed. "It's about time you admit it."
They stayed there a while, talking about old memories from school and silly things that had nothing to do with the weight Kenma carried. Kuroo knew that just a little bit of relief, a few laughs, could ease his friend's mind, even if it was temporary.
As they walked back, Kuroo saw Kenma glancing at him out of the corner of his eye. "Thanks," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kuroo rubbed his back briefly, acting casual even though he felt a rush of relief. "Anytime," he replied. He knew tonight's victory might be small, but it was a step, and sometimes, that was all Kenma needed—a small reminder he wasn't alone in this fight. And for now, that was enough.
