Standing by my car, I watched as the door flew open with a little boy running out in the front yard, beelining towards his mini bike. My eyes sliced to his mother who watched him with a smile on her face, telling him not to go in the street.
I walked towards them with his chest tightening every step I took, stopping by the edge of the driveway seeing her eyes widen. "Detective" surprise laced in her tone. "I didn't expect to see you again, is everything alright?" Her tone slightly panicked as her eyes shot to her son who was contently riding his bike.
I walked up towards her, pulling out a photo of Malcom Lincoln in an orange jumpsuit. She froze as she took the photo from his hands, tears spilling over her eyes as she put her hand over her mouth.
"We got him Lina." I said as her teary eyes looked up at him, "We got him, and he's not going anywhere." She closed her eyes, letting out a silent sob then wrapping her arms around me tightly. Returning the sentiment as I allowed her to cry. My eyes never leaving the toddler that was nearing the stop sign of the street.
"Lively as I remember" I said tapping her as she spun around to see him,
"Jeremy Pikes get over here right now!"
I chuckled seeing him whip his little head back, a goofy smile on his face as he circled back to his house, running towards his mother's arms.Lina Pikes was Malcom's ex-girlfriend, her parents sought help by coming into the station one day, seeing her all bloodied from the bastard beating her senseless and assaulting her. She refused to press charges and defended him whenever her parents told her to send him off to jail, always sticking by him.
She contacted me a couple years back, the night where she found out she was pregnant and realized it wasn't ideal for her to raise her baby with a violent drunkard. At now twenty six years old, she's left behind her former self and grew into a beautiful and sharp woman, with her almost three year old son helping her achieve that.
We've kept low contact after helping her get out of the city and into a small and quiet neighborhood, occasionally checking up on both of them and sending gifts for each of their birthdays. Her son peeked over her leg, shooting him a smile that quickly made him hide again.
He motioned his mother to crouch down so he could tell her something, whispering in her ear which earned a smile from her, "This is a man, who saved the both of us baby." She said while hugging him tight.
I shook my head, "That was all you Lina, I just so happen to be present while you did."
Before she could refute me his little voice chimed in "My mommy's a superhero!" He said with a bright smile on his face, I crouched down to be eye level with him and held on my hand for him to take, which after glancing at his mother for permission he did."She is, and that's why you need to help her whenever you can." I said while taking a coin out of his ear, making his eyes widen and fill with curiosity.
"Did you see that mommy?"She nodded and giggled at his next words,
"Are you a wizard?" I didn't answer his question, glancing up at his mother with a smile on my face, "Just someone who happens to know a couple a tricks."I said my goodbyes to them, before leaving I heard a voice call out, "Detective"
I spun around and saw that she was holding a white pouch, she took my hand and wrapped my fingers around it, her light green eyes tearing up with a smile on her face.
