4. In Books

The phone broke me out of my reverie. I got up from my couch and took the phone. The sound that I heard didn't turn out to be a missed call; in fact it turned out to be a text.

"Meet me at our usual in five, Noah". My relationship with Noah has developed in a very good way for the past four years. In the first year it was strictly formal because I only saw him in the library whenever he came to visit his grandmother. The following year, I got to see him more often since the newspaper (Which is the New York Times) reduced the amount of trips he had to take. And when his father died last year in a car accident, he asked his boss to assign him to New York so he can stay close to his mother. So, I got to see him almost every day.

In those last two years I went out with Noah more frequently, we went to Halloween parties, weddings and special occasions like that. Our first time out was on my 20th birthday (Which technically wasn't completely ours because the whole book shop staff was with us) when everybody in the store decided to make me a surprise party. After that, Allie started sending us to special dinners that she was supposed to attend using being sick and tiered as her excuses(Which by the way are so not true considering she is the healthiest 70 year old women I've met in my life). I can simply define our relationship as best, best, best friends.

I put my phone back on table and rushed to my bedroom. I opened my wardrobe and peered inside. It's never really hard to pick out an outfit whenever I'm going out with Noah to "Our usual" place. I put on my worn out jeans and a cobalt blue sweater. On my way out of the house I picked up my phone and grabbed my coat on the way.

It took my two minutes to reach "Dilly's Diner". It was our usual place to hang out when we just want to talk and in the same time enjoy New York's best cheese burger.

I spotted him instantly. His blond hair was shining in the moonlight. He was wearing his dark blue winter sweater and holding his coat in his right hand. Even if I couldn't see his clothes I would've guessed it was him from the way he leaned back on the diner wall.

I walked up to him, but he seemed caught up in his own world of thought. "Hey, what's up?" I said in clear voice hoping it was enough to break him out of his reverie. "Oh. Hey there. I didn't see you coming I'm sorry. You must be freezing. Come on, let's go inside". He pushed the diner door and gestured me to go inside.

We took our seat near the window as usual. He called the waitress,(Which was completely ignoring my presence an staring at Noah with a stupid grin on her face ) he ordered two cheese burgers, two large French fries, and two large cokes.

"So what made you call me here at ten o'clock at night?" I said softly. "I called you here for two reasons actually. The first reason was considering in almost two hours you'll be 22 years I wanted to be the first to say happy birthday". I smiled shyly and said "Well, I assure you, you are the first one to say that. But aren't you supposed to say it when I'm actually 22?" "Well, don't worry I'll repeat it when it's twelve o'clock".

"Okay, that's the first reason, what's the second one?".

"It's actually a surprise." And as he was saying that he was pulling something out from his coat pocket.

"I know how much you like legends and myths since you were little so I thought maybe we can go check something like that out" he said that while he was holding what looked like two plane tickets.

"What do you mean? Check something like that out?" I said.

"You must've heard of the scroll they discovered in Brazil about the diamonds, right? And you do know that it's been transferred to Paris ".

At that point I knew what he was talking about. "Are you talking about the three tears of time? The three diamonds? The scroll that was discovered in that temple in Brazil five days ago?. At that point I knew I was going hysterical but I couldn't stop babbling.
