I sit on the couch in the middle of Morty and Summer. Mom sits on the armchair next to the couch. The house is decorated with Christmas decorations for the holiday. The three of us all sit on our devices. Morty and I play a game against each other while Summer is on social media. Dad saunders into the room, wearing his Christmas apron and outfit.
"Um, Merry Christmas?" He puts his arms on his hips, I glance at him before looking back at my tablet. "Hellooooo? My parents are coming over for the first time in years! Can we stow the gadgets and look alive ?" He steps in front of all of us, raising his arms to get our attention.
"Alive? For your parents?" Mom remarks nonchalantly, not looking up at him. Dad snatches her tablet from her.
"Good one." He stows the device in a stocking.
"Hey, man!" Mom calls out, sitting up.
"You 'hey man'! This holiday is about humanity." Dad turns around to face her, a solemn look on his face.
"You know, I thought it was about being born half-God or something." Morty comments, not looking up from his tablet. Dad goes to reply but I respond to Morty.
"Uh no, it's about Jesus."
"No, yeah, that's what I said"
"Okay, whatever." Dad affirms. "All electronic items are going in the stocking. Now" He opens up the stocking and leans over at Morty, who puts the tablet in the stocking. I recoil slightly when he comes over to me.
"Really Dad?" I sigh.
"Yes, really, (Y/N). Stocking. Now" I roll my eyes, complying. Summer also protests.
"Dad, I'm not giving you my phone." She crosses her arms. Dad gives her a look.
"Put it in the stocking, Summer, or I'm joining Facebook." Summer gasps at Dad's threat, she quickly drops the phone into the stocking.
"Ho ho ho, everybody." Rick greets as he enters the front door. A homeless-looking Santa with messy clothes and drool on his beard follows in behind. Gross. Dad sets the stocking down and immediately walks over to them. I lean over on the couch to get a better look.
"More like whoa-whoa-whoa. What is this? My parents are coming!" Dad gestures to guy.
"Calm down Jerry–" Rick responds, setting his arm on the guy's shoulder. "This is Ruben, an old friend."
"Pearl Harbor." The man states.
"–I check in on him once a year and give him a little–" Rick belches as he continues "–medical evaluation." Mom, who had now stood up and walked over to the doorway smiled.
"Aw, Dad. That is so sweet." She walks next to Dad, who is not having it.
"Yeah..." He eyes Rick, squinting. "It is. I don't get it."
"Korea." Ruben states.
"Don't worry about your C-Christmas, Jerry." Rick burps, and he starts to lead Ruben away. Morty, Summer, and I walk up to our parents. "Ruben and I'll be in my workshop while you have another day in Phil Collins' proverbial paradise.
"Huh. You think you know a guy." Dad states, watching Rick walk off. The doorbell rings and he jumps in front of us. "Okay, there's my parents. Now remember, no TV, no phones, no laptops, we are connecting this Christmas, like old-school Jews on a Saturday." The three of us glare at Dad as he outstretches his arms. He opens the door and we all lighten up our expressions. "Hey hey!" He greets his parents.
