"Payal ji ki sharth thi ki tumhari parchayi bhi Khushiji par padhni nahi chahiye." [It was Payal-ji's condition that even. your shadow shouldn't touch Khushi-ji.]
"Tumhari taraf se hamari barphai." Anjali looked at him straight in the eye. [It was our way of apologising on your behalf.]
Anjali's words echoed in his mind like a broken recorder on repeat, heart prickling at the venom in her tone.
And Khushi, she was full of life, running around the cafeteria, her laugh bouncing off the walls of the once deadly silent office. Issi ko raunak kehthe hain kya? [Is this what they mean by life in the office?]
It was jarring to see her smiling, cheeks pink with life and a skip in her step. The last time he saw her was with broken bangles, skin pale and cold as ice.
"Zinda hain, agar vahi poochna chathe hain toh." [She is alive, if that's what you are asking.]
Without his permission, Payal's scathing tone echoed in his mind once again.
Arnav was filled with an overwhelming urge of throwing his coffee mug against the wall but decided against it. He watched from his office, his three siblings just leaving the cafeteria.
For some unknown reason, Arnav found himself walking towards the cafeteria with a glare that screamed 'murder'. The entire cafeteria stood up at his entry, freezing in their tracks, wondering as to why was ASR in the office cafeteria.
And as always, Khushi was the alst too notice, too engrossed in ehr meal when the sudden silence made her look up, mouth open and the bite in her hand freezing midair.
Arnav raised his coffee mug, now cold and stared right into Khushi's eyes. "Yeh coffee kisne banayi?"[Who made this coffee?] He yelled, not once looking away from Khushi.
A peon came running to stand beside him, cowering in fear. Arnav thrusted the mug in his hand. "Bohot ghatiya banayi hain." [Terribly made] Still not looking away from Khushi, "Bring me another coffee."
And with that he sat down in one of the tables, sparing one warning glare at the other employees that they interpreted as a 'Mind your own business' and hyper-focused on their meals, not daring to look up.
The peon was reduced to tears in the kitchen and Khushi had to go with the fresh cup of coffee to ASR as nobody else had the guts to.
"Hai Devi Maiya, raksha karna." [Oh Devi, please protect me.] She and every single employee in the cafeteria prayed for Khushi as she approached ASR with his new coffee.
Arnav stared at her unblinking as she set the coffee down, "A-aur kuch lenge aap?" [A-anyhting else sir?]
Arnav didn't answer, sipping his coffee and leaving with the mug without another word.
"Bas chal diye? Ajeeb aadmi hain." [That's it? Such a weird man.] Khushi mumbled going back to her lunch.
