The bus rumbled back towards Seabrook, the cheerleaders buzzing with the excitement of a successful camp. Y/N sat towards the back, next to Bonzo, his usual goofy grin replaced by a contemplative frown. He stared at a carved apple in his lap, the green skin marred by clumsy lettering: "I ♥ BREE."

Y/N stifled a smile. Bonzo's artistic skills were...unique, but the sentiment was clear. She glanced at him, then towards the front of the bus, where Bree chatted animatedly with Addison.

"How in the..." Y/N trailed off, shaking her head. "You carved Bree's face on it?"

Bonzo shot her a sheepish grin. "You should give it to her," Y/N said firmly.

Bonzo shook his head, his frown deepening. Y/N sighed. "Look," she started, "she likes you too, you know? Like, a lot. Ignoring her isn't exactly helping your case."

The complexities of human emotions were a whole new world for Bonzo. Back when Zombies were feared, things were much simpler. This entire "love" thing, though? It was a tangled mess of insecurities and mixed signals, like trying to decipher a cryptic crossword puzzle with leftover pizza for brains.

"Maybe it's just fear of messing up," Y/N mused, her voice softer. She understood that feeling all too well. Fear of rejection had been a constant companion during her childhood, a fear that stemmed from the secrecy that cloaked her true nature. A witch living amongst humans – it was a recipe for disaster, or at least that was what she thought, she forced herself to forget that when coming to Seabrook, she couldn't lose control again.

"But you know, she won't wait forever," Y/N added gently.

Bonzo pondered this, a sliver of hope flickering in his eyes. He looked down at the apple, a small smile playing on his lips. He nodded curtly.

A sudden cheer erupted from the front of the bus. A boy had snagged an invitation to Prawn, the annual end-of-summer bash. Y/N felt a pang of loneliness. Maybe she wouldn't go this year. She could stay home, binge-watch her favourite show with her cat, Luna, or curl up on the porch swing with a steaming cup of tea and a good book.

As the bus rumbled on, Y/N looked out the window, a familiar landmark catching her eye. It was the spot where Zed had staged his elaborate Prawn-posal for Addison the day before camp.

A memory flickered in her mind, transporting her back to that sunny afternoon. Zed, her best friend's ever-enthusiastic cousin, had dragged her out to a deserted road.

Flashback

"Where are we going?" Y/N had complained, her pink ponytail bouncing with each step.

"Almost there!" Zed had yelled back, slightly regretting the distance they'd walked. This whole "setting the scene" thing was proving more difficult than anticipated.

"Almost where?" Y/N panted, feigning exhaustion. "We've been walking for miles!"

"Here!" Zed announced triumphantly, gesturing at...an abandoned road.

Y/N raised an eyebrow. "An abandoned road? Is this where I meet my untimely demise?" She dropped to her knees dramatically. "Please, Zed, don't kill me! I have a cat to take care of!"

Zed rolled his eyes, a playful smile on his lips. He adored Y/Na's sense of humour. "No killing," he assured her. "Although, I might be reconsidering..."

Y/N burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the deserted road. As their laughter subsided, Zed explained his elaborate plan for impressing Addison.

Y/N had found it sweet, albeit a little reckless. But that was Zed – always going for the grand gesture.

Deep within the forbidden forest, hidden amongst the gnarled branches and thick undergrowth, two figures watched a scene unfold on the dusty road bordering the woods. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, casting fleeting shadows on their faces.

"They're here," the boy muttered, his green eyes narrowed on the approaching figures of Zed and Y/N. He didn't understand why the alpha insisted on keeping tabs on a human cheerleader and her zombie friend.

The girl remained silent, her gaze fixated on Y/N. A low growl rumbled in her throat, a sound that sent shivers down Wyatt's spine. He'd never seen the alpha so unsettled.

"She might be funny..." Willa finally spoke, her voice laced with suspicion, "but there is something different about her, her scent doesn't smell like human or zombie."

The boy scoffed. "Look, Willa, I think you're being too paranoid. She's just a regular human!"

The girl shot him a sharp glare. "I don't think so, just trust me on this..." The alpha's gaze flickered back to Y/N, a frown creasing her brow. "Keep an eye on her," she instructed, her voice a low growl.

The boy bristled. He didn't want to be babysitting a cheerleader, especially one who seemed oblivious to the danger lurking in the shadows. But there was something about Y/N, a strange energy, that piqued his curiosity. He couldn't explain it, but he found himself grudgingly accepting the alpha's orders.

Back to present

Suddenly, a strange prickling sensation ran down Y/N's spine. She felt a pair of eyes on her, a gaze filled with an unsettling intensity. Glancing around, she saw nothing but trees and the dusty road receding behind them. But the feeling persisted, a cold whisper that sent shivers down her neck.

Unbeknownst to Y/N, hidden deep within the woods, a pair of glowing yellow eyes watched the bus disappear into the distance. A low growl rumbled through the trees, a sound that spoke of curiosity and something else...a flicker of recognition. The alpha werewolf, narrowed her eyes. There was something different about that human girl, something that will change the course of the future, whether it was positive or negative that was yet to be discovered...
