"I love you."
Lila's mind was instantly filled with surprise, but she quickly covered it up by plastering a big smile on her face. "I love you too."
No, I don't. But it would be rude not to say it back, wouldn't it? She thought.
Thomas's lips crashed into hers the moment he saw the smile on her face, taking it as Lila's unspoken consent for him to kiss her.
It felt wrong, yet she didn't push away. I told him I loved him; I needed to make him believe it.
So, she did the only rational thing she could think of. She kissed him back.
She knew very well that she was leading him on. But she can make it work. She'll love him eventually. He doesn't have to know.
Her boyfriend's words sunk deep into her heart, tattooing themselves onto it. I'll love him. I promise.
Hours turned to days, and days turned to weeks. Not a single one of those days went by without them uttering those three simple yet meaningful words to each other.
When it finally hit the five month mark, Lila realized that even if it had become a routine for her, it didn't feel forced like it used to.
I love him.
She knew she would. It took a little longer than she would've hoped, but Lila got there.
All that wishful thinking, basically forcing myself to fall into the hole we all call love, finally paid off. Lila was in love with Thomas, and she didn't feel like she was pretending anymore!
Since then, every single time his fingers grazed her skin, She felt butterflies in her stomach, and she hung onto every word he uttered.
Because Lila was in love.
Call it cliché, but her world stopped for a second whenever I saw Thomas, and the moment he stepped into a room, it was as if it was only the two of them there.
So, one could imagine just how Lila felt when she visited him in his office one time, a beautiful, tall blonde looking very comfortable on his lap, basically sucking his face off.
And he didn't do anything to stop it.
They could've at least shut the door first. Nobody needed to see that.
One would think that at that moment, all she saw was red—just firing rage. But they'd be wrong. All Lila saw was her world shattering into a million little pieces too tiny to pick up and put back together.
By then, the two had been together for a year, and her whole world revolved around him, so the sight in front of her really was the last thing she would've wanted to see.
Lila's mouth hung open. It may have been out of shock, or maybe it was her face's way of stopping her from crying, because not a single tear rolled down her cheek. Her eyes didn't even water.
She felt numb.
She wasn't even able to take a step into his office before someone bumped her out of the way as people bustled around her, trying to get things done. It was like she was invisible, but she took her place once again.
"You didn't have to cheat on me, you know?" the broken girl's voice shook, but her face remained dry. "If you really wanted her, it wouldn't have been so hard to break up with me first."
Apparently, she was loud enough to hear from across the room because the girl stared at her with wide eyes and threw herself off Lila's boyfriend. Could she even still call him that?
"I'll talk to you later," Thomas addressed the girl, implying that he wanted her to leave him and Lila alone first.
"She doesn't have to leave. I'll leave," Lila held the girl's arm as she walked by her, preventing her from leaving. "You two looked busy. I'm sorry I interrupted."
"No, I'll just go," the girl excused herself, pulling her arm out of Lila's grasp. "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
To be completely honest, it really did seem like her words were genuine. Poor girl.
The door shut behind Lila, leaving just her in the office with her boyfriend. Ex?
"I don't have to stay any longer. We're done," she announced.
It hurt for her to say that, but she couldn't help but realize how much their relationship was already falling apart before that moment.
They didn't spend much time together anymore. Not many stolen kisses or holding her hand out in public. Barely any good night texts before they went to bed.
"I don't know what you're going on about," Thomas scoffed. "Cheating on you?"
"Yes, cheating on me. What don't you get?" the frustration was evident in her voice. "You two were swapping spit like your lives depended on it, and you wouldn't consider that cheating?"
"Kissing someone else is cheating, but the two of us aren't even together, so I'm not cheating on anyone."
What the hell was he talking about? Of course they were together. The last year of her life wasn't just her imagination.
"What are you even saying?"
"I'm saying that we aren't even in a relationship. I thought that was clear."
Lila's eyebrows furrowed. "So you're telling me that you say you love me every single day, but that doesn't mean we're together?"
"No, because we aren't together."
It was her turn to scoff. "Thanks for the love, I guess. Sorry for bothering you."
"Don't be like that. What about our friendship?"
Friendship, my ass. After this? There isn't a single bone in my body that wants that. She desperately wanted to spit those words out, but refrained herself. She was going to be the bigger person in this situation and not stoop down to his level in any way.
"How real was the I love you that you told me?" she changed the subject. "The very first one."
Just from the laugh that came out of his mouth, she already had her answer. "You actually believed that?"
"You disgust me."
"Come on, lighten up, flower," she cringed when she heard the nickname he called her. "If it's any consolation, you're a pretty good bang."
"Take that back."
Even if she did love him, she wasn't going to let him say stuff like that. She wasn't an object.
"Okay, I take it back," he raised his hands up as if surrendering.
"You made me feel like a terrible human being when I didn't love you at first because I thought you loved me. Turns out, I was just a stupid human being because I fell for you anyway."
Her face was straight all throughout that, and her eyes held his as the words came out of her mouth.
"Stop trying to make me feel guilty."
She rolled my eyes. "I'm the one who made the mistake here. I'll leave you alone forever, and I hope you do the same. Goodbye."
As she walked out of the office, she heard him call out, "Goodbye, flower. I love you."
