When Serene had agreed to her setup with Cruz six months ago, there was one condition both of them had agreed to. There were going to be no strings attached. He found her attractive, and she found him attractive. They wanted each other there to satisfy themselves. That was all there was to it.
Now, Serene stares at herself through her vanity mirror as she prepares for yet another date with Cruz, wondering where the hell everything went so wrong.
Her phone lights up with a text from him: Just got off work, I'll fetch you in 30. I miss you so much, gorgeous.
She types up a quick response: perfect! also, we saw each other two days ago.
His reply is almost immediate: Doesn't matter, I still miss you. I'll see you in a bit :)
Her eyes roll as she laughs and types: okay, drive safe!
His last message reads: Of course, I still have to see you.
It is messages like that that make Serene question if she was doing the right thing by not ending this—whatever it is—already.
She heaves a sigh and shakes her head, forcing the thought to the back of her brain. She's happy, and that's all that matters. "It's for fun, and I'm having fun."
Her fingers fiddle with the clasp of her necklace, a gift from Cruz, as she puts it on herself and nods. "Right. For fun, that's the agreement."
She spends the next few minutes making sure her outfit is all set and smiles when she sees the time on her watch. Just on time.
Spritzing some perfume on herself, she hears her apartment's doorbell ring, making her grab the purse on her bed and walk to the door.
"Hi." His smile is enough to make her knees go weak, and the way he moves in to plant a kiss on her cheek just solidifies it even more. "Ready?"
She nods and steps out of the apartment with him, locking the door behind her. "How was work? Did your presentation go well?"
His lips quirk up. "It was really good. It was a really tiring day, though, so I'm happy I'm here with you now."
"Then we'll have a good time tonight so you can forget about your tiring day, hmm?" Serene decides, allowing her fingers to intertwine with his as they walk to the elevator.
The two make their way to Cruz's car and eventually find themselves at the fancy new Italian place they've been planning on going to for a few weeks now.
His hand finds its way around her waist and grips it gently as they walk from the car to the restaurant.
"Reservation for Cruz Silva," he tells the lady at the front. Her name is Alina, according to the nametag pinned to her shirt.
She scans the list on the clipboard in front of her and nods, leading the couple to their table. "Right this way."
Cruz keeps his arm around Serene as they follow the girl. He even plants a soft kiss on Serene's shoulder once they get to their table, which is why a smile appears on her lips.
Alina hands them each a menu. "A waiter will be with you shortly to take your order. Enjoy your night."
"Thank you." Cruz nods at her as she leaves.
"Do you know what you want?" Serene asks him, scanning the menu. He can't help but notice the small frown she had on her face, a sign of her concentration.
