I took my spot in the back of the crowd, pulling my floppy sun hat on and aviators. I breathed slowly and smoothed my blue dress down.
I prayed silently that he wouldn't see me, how embarrassing would it be if he saw me, after all these years.
We hadn't spoken  but I still felt the obligation to come to his graduation. I mean he went because of me and now he was valedictorian.
So I used my parents invitation to get in (it's sad he still watches the Super Bowl with my dad but can't even sent me a text message).
I could feel the sweat trickling down my neck as he came up for his speech.
The crowd clapped politely and he adjusted the mic.
'He looks so good' I think sadly.
"Welcome family, friends, teachers, staff and fellow classmates." He looks up and smiles and the crowd cheers. "When I was a Freshmen in high school, I had a plan, graduate and help my dad in his mechanic business. But then I met this girl, and god it sounds so cliche, but this girl was my world. She was crazy, no doubt, she wore two watches, east and west coast time. "
The crowd laughed and I rubbed my watches.
"She loved plans, she would schedule our dates to the minute even. And she loved school." He sighed and I swear I saw him look right at me. "She showed me the book The Outsiders and I think it changed me. Ponyboy was supposed to be this tough kid and that's what everyone thought, but he read Jack Frost and liked books and loved family. I liked that. That I could be someone that no one expected. So I started to try in school and you could say it was because of her. But I like to think I made the choice. The choice to be different."
I felt a tear run down my check.
"She loved plans but because of her I changed mine."
He smiled and held his golden valedictorian stripe, "and now I can say that I stayed gold."

Two years later
I anxiously tapped my foot and checked my first watch.
Where the hell was Paul?
Just as I was about to call out a search party, he sat in the seat across from me.
"Bella, I'm so so sorry I'm 2 minutes late, court was hectic today."
"I guess I can forgive you," I smiled and leaned across the table kissing him on the cheek.
He grinned, "so how were those annoying high schoolers today?"
"Well," I took a sip of my water, "I gave them a test and I think they all failed it so I'm a great teacher."
He put his hand on mine and smiled," they are teenagers they probably didn't listen to your amazing lessons."
I laughed, "you're probably right."
"Okay so guess what?" Paul smiled.
"What?"
"I got out tickets to your hometown for Christmas."
"Thank you, I can't wait for you to meet my family, they will love you."
"I hope they do, but I mean I have four months to prepare."
"I like things planned!" He laughed.
"I know, I know. Oh I have another thing to ask you. It's important. "
"Okay what is it," I leaned closer to him.
"I was hoping that you could move in with me."
I dropped my jaw and suddenly had a hard time swallowing. "Uhhh..."
"Bella, we've been dating for almost three years, and I love you. But I don't want to make you uncomfortable." He looked worried so I smiled and said; "I'll think about it."
