Sunday 24th June
"Ellie I'm really sorry to be doing this to you. You know if there was any other option I wouldn't."Shaking my head although my dad couldn't see since he was on the phone to me, I quickly undid my apron, getting a little stuck with the knot I'd done earlier but eventually undoing it successfully.
"It's fine dad. I completely understand and you know I don't mind looking after Hunter. Tyson wouldn't mind having him around the cafe anyway. Everyone loves him here. It's no problem at all."
I adjusted my phone on my shoulder because I could feel it slipping and began my journey to the door. Luckily, it was quiet right now and Alexander wouldn't struggle with holding down the fort all alone. Tyson was in the back anyway so if there was suddenly a massive influx of customers he'd be there to help as well. I wasn't going to be gone long anyway so I didn't feel too bad. Hunter was down at the park close by at his soccer training. I'd be gone 30 minutes max if I walked fast enough.
"I know you don't mind Ellie and I love you for that but still I hate to do this to you especially when you're working today anyway."
"Dad, it's fine. I'm honestly not bothered at all."
When the breeze ruffled my hair slightly, I started regretting not bringing a jacket today. It was cooler but I still wore a short sleeved top and shorts. Recently it had been between 82°F-77°F but today it was about 71°F, much colder than what I'd gotten used to. The June heat was slowly ebbing away rather than increasing this it usually does as it gets closer to July-August time. In no way was I complaining either. Summer was not the best season for me. If I was lucky, I'd only get a little sunburnt. If I was unlucky, my skin would be peeling and I'd look like a tomato constantly. Anyone to catch me on those unlucky days was unlucky themselves.
"Ellie I need to get going but thank you so much." On the other side of the phone, I could hear dad rustling some papers. "I'll be sure to drop by Roberto's on the way home and get you your favourite pizza okay. I love you."
"I love you too. Bye."
Once he'd said his own goodbye, my dad hung up the phone. When I pocketed it and finally looked around, I noticed the car was back. Jake's car was back and unlike the last time I'd seen it, there was actually someone coming out of it this time. He had to lean down slightly to fit out but when he stood back up to his complete height, I noticed he'd made the wise decision to bundle up unlike me.
After locking his car, he turned around and his eyes instantly landed on me. I smiled and gave him a wave. His confusion wasn't lost on me and after looking left and then right, he crossed over and stood opposite me.
"Has your shift ended?"
"Well hello to you too Jake. Yeah it's so nice to see you as well. I've had a wonderful day."
He rolled his eyes at my witty words but it didn't bother me. I'd come to realise he wasn't being mean when he rolled his eyes. He was just being Jake and I liked Jake so it didn't really bother me too much. Instead, it just made me smile wider.
